I HAD LOWER BACK SURGERY 2 YEARS AGO DUE TO A RUPTURED DISK. I HAD A MICROLAMINOMY PERFORMED. I STILL HAVE ALOT OF BACK PAIN. MAINLY WHEN I SIT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. I RUN ON AVERAGE 20 MILES PER WEEK AND HAVE RECENTLY RAN A HALF MARATHON. AFTER ABOUT 8 OR 10 MILES MY BACK STARTS TO HURT AND I HAVE SOME PAIN. I WANT TO RUN A FALL MARATHON IF MY BACK WILL HOLD UP. I AM A 44 YEAR OLD MALE AND HAVE BEEN RUNNING FOR 25 YEARS. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THOUGHTS ON WHY I SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT RUN A MARATHON. I HAVE ONE MARATHON UNDER MY BELT.

Dear Sir,
I too had lower back surgery, a disectomy (?) in the L4/5 area in May, 1990.  I too ran Marathons. Thirteen in all, and how I miss it.  I feel as if a large part of my life was taken away from me.
Initially after surgery I was able to run for several years without too much discomfort.  Unfortunately, the pain gradually worsened, until I could no longer run.  What was left of my disc has continued to degenerate.  I now also have bone spurs, which I did not before my surgery.  At times I feel as if my continued running was the culprit, or that at least it exacerbated the normal rate of degeneration.
I would have my disc checked (MRI) to see the status of its condition.  Hopefully, that will give you an objective view of its health, and whether you should continue, or not, as difficult as it may be.
Good luck.

I'm 47 male, waiting for surgery, my advice is listen to your insides, is it worth it? and what will be the price, then decide. I got my permit for Cannibis, in addition to Oxycodone and each day I get by and still ride Harley and Fly Cessna, I'll bop til I drop with God's Grace.
