Dear Sir/Madam, I have a three month old pedigree...

Dear Sir/Madam,


I have a three month old pedigree female Basset pup who has been with us (myself, husband and 2 children) for a month.  2 weeks ago, Gigi, our pup started behaving agressively toward my children (aged 2 yrs and 8 yrs) for no apparent reason.  Gigi likes to play - nibbles and tries to bite our hands and feet but this "other behaviour" is my concern  On Thursday night, Gigi bit my father and my mother whilst sitting on their laps  - she was not being harmed or provoked in anyway.  I feed Gigi and am the one who usually takes her for walks.  I give her lots of TLC and have taught my children how to play with her.  Last night, 10 May, we were all sitting around and Gigi was on my lap.  She started growling at first and then, suddenly turned on me and almost bit my face. She was vicious and ferocious and this "attack" lasted a seconds and she then behaved normally again.

I have always had dogs, Boxers and Dachshunds  and have considerable knowledge of puppy behaviour. However, I am concerned at these "reactions" which Gigi is displaying as she is not being provoked in anyway and  I am now concerned that she may harm the children.  

I have spoken to her breeder (here in Portugal) who believes the problem is jealousy but found it odd that he should phone me back a few minutes later to say they would "exchange" her if I wished...  I am worried and upset by all of this and have no interest in "exchanging" because we love Gigi and have already achieved a lot with her however, I cannot trust an animal which can harm my children and others.
