I am researching a family member who was killed in action.  My question is how would they notify next of kin, and would they bury them in or near that battlefield or send them home?  My soldier died in Newtonia, Mo 30, Sept 1862.
Gustav Kietzmann

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, I dont have an answer, but I was just wondering where you got that information.  Because Gustav Kietzmann is my great great grandfather and I was unaware that he died during the civil war.  Im currently doing some reasearch on him and would love to find out any more info you may have on him.
