Black lab in Colorado scratching and developed bumps on face. The scratching increased considerably as spring approached than a few weeks later several large bumps on the face developed. Our Vet thinks there is an allergy response underlying a possiblility of bee stings. Benadryl works but must be 2 pills/6 hours. It has been 10 days and the scratching still exists. She bits her back, licks paws and underbelly, rubs her face on the carpet and against the couch and shakes her head, face becomes swollen nearing the end of the 6 hours benadryl dose. The bumps on the face and nose are still present but not as exstensive as the first occurance. Any ideas?

I have a black lab that does exactly the same scratching and rubbing you describe for your dog.
Our dog developed bumps under her chin.   I treated them with BAND-AID ANTISEPTIC WASH.
Our vet thought the bumps were an infection.  It took several weeks, but they healed and are no longer a problem.
I have no idea why our lab scratches so much.  Our vet says it could be an allergy, but I have changed her food and have tried many different brands and mixes.   Nothing helps.
I have tried frequent baths using a variety of commercial shampoos.   She got short relief from the baths (one day or so).   However, I may have found a shampoo combination that may work for an extended period.   I tried it once and it seemed to provide relief for over a week!   I am trying it again to see if it works.
Our dog also shakes her head frequently.   This is a problem with her ears and could be mites, fungus or bacterial.   Working on this also.   I cleaned her ears with a solution the vet sold me, but it seemed to make the problem worse.   Antibiotic or anti fungal drops seemed to help some.

Good luck,
LAM
