I have a Fluffy Pembroke Welsh Corgi, 6 months old.  The heat seem to really effect him, and I am very concerned since we haven't even reached the hottest part of the summer.

Has anyone ever shaved their Corgi?  Does it help?  If you shave them, does it effect how their hair grows back?  Any other concerns, recomendations, to shave or not to shave?

Thanks,
Melinda

I had one growing up. We shaved him and had very little problems. As he got older, however, his hair would grow back in patches. With our present little boy, it does the same, but he has a regular coat. We are not sure if it is because they were fixed or something else.

We did notice, with both dogs, that their hair grew it patchy after they were fixed and coincided with weight gain.  This hasn't happened with our female.

My female fluffy Pembroke was shaved this summer so she could swim and run with the big dogs. She was spayed at 12 mo. and is 15mo.now.Her hair is growing in evenly and shiny...and she doesn't shed...and she stays slender because she runs with the big herding and retriever dogs..'and  a feisty rat terrier 'til she is satiisfied.
She gets her motivation from  other dogs outside if they are running or swimming..but stays stationary in the house mostly sleeping.like a cat..doesnt play with anything ..

I have shaved my corgi girl and she's had no problems with the fur growing  back with its same thickness or waterproofness.  She's extremely happier when she's shaved because it's a lot cooler for her.  And here in Hawaii, whatever coolness she can get, she'll take.

We got a super fluffy in spring as well and just let him ride out the summer.  He did well, but have to admit he is definately an indoor, air-conditioning type.  I don't have the heart to shave him, he's too beautiful.

Other Corgi owners told me he'll get used to it, so we just let him ride it out.  He did fine.

Shaving a dog will not help it cool down. The thick coat actually helps to insulate the cold to keep the dog cool. make sure to give your dog lots of water and maybe even a small plastic pool filled with water for him to cool down in.

dogs have hair for a reason and should never be shaved; clipped close maybe.

I have a fluffy. I take him to a groomer about every 5 weeks. If I didn't, he would be a matted mess. He is a cutie and loves to be groomed. We also have a cardigan, which doesn't have to be groomed. I just bath and clip her nails. We love our Corgis, they have brought a lot of laughter and fun to our lives.

Hi Melinda,
I have a six year old fluffy corgi (that I raised from 8 weeks) and I live in the Washington DC area, so our summers get very hot.  I have never shaved him, and he does get bothered by the heat.  I have several tips for you:
First, I ease him into it each spring -- starting out by going out in the earlier or later hours and trying to keep to shadier routes.
2nd, I take plenty of cold (but NOT icy!) water both for him to drink and to douse him around the neck periodically if he shows signs of really slowing down.
3rd, on really hot days (this does not work as well when it's really humid, unfortunately, but it helps somewhat even then) I completely soak him (except for his face and ears!) with the hose before we even start our walk, and then I replenish with the bottled water (carried in a backpack) as I go. If I can, I also walk through some sprinklers on the way! We normally do three miles even in the dead of summer (though NOT in the middle of the day -- usually before 10:00 am or after 6:00pm) with this technique.  Good luck and enjoy your fluffy -- they're the best!
