This whole song reflects the afterlife of a Vietnam Australian War Veteran. From what I can gather, the line, "And how we sailed into Sydney Harbour," Is actually incorrect, as returning soldiers travelled by air, but the recurring line "The last plane out of sydneys almost gone," just refers to this veteran wanting to leave and find a reasonable meaning to his life in a different place. (A lot of veterans were very traumatised after the war.) This may be incorrect, but I think it has some  truth. Hope this helped:)
