I am trying to use mkfifo to send piped information to a plotting program, xmgrace.

I have created a pipe (mkfifo) and opened the program to listen for information from the pipe.

But when I send information to the pipe, eg
% echo "exit" > xmgrace_pipe

I get the message
% xmgrace_pipe: file exists

How am I meant to use this function?
