It is estimated that 1 million people died in Auschwitz, mainly from disease as medicines were not readily available during war time - especially as towards the end of the war as allies routinely bombed rail lines. Another contributing factor in the deaths was the environment, a wet muddy environment aided in the spread of diseases such as TB. Over 100,000 non-jewish people died in the camp, contrary to jewish claims that as many as 4 million jewish people alone died there.

"fsolution"'s answer is a mixture of semi-accuracies and a rehashing of Holocaust denial lies. For years, indeed, the Polish communist government claimed 4 million deaths, but that turned out to be a figure referring to all Holocaust deaths through early 1944. The disease and rail line bombing party line is nonsense; according to the best available records, between 1.1 and 1.5 million human beings were murdered by overwork or in the  gas chambers, and their bodies burned in the factory crematoria at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Nazis systematically starved and denied available medication to prisoners at all the camps.

An estimated 1.6 million people including gypsies, prostitutes, homosexuals and thieves were murdered or died in Auschwitz. Diseases, gas chambers, and human expirements  contributed to the many deaths if not murdered.

Rudolf hjss, The camp commandant testafied that up to 2.5 million people died in the camp, but in 1990, the Auschwitz State museum revised the figure and new calculations were placed, and approx. 1.1 - 1.6 million died.
