The way world war one started is that the Germans wanted more land and Poland was and still is a very, very pretty place so the Germans wanted it as their own. The English people found out that the Germans were going to attack Poland and said "If you attack Poland we will attack you,"! But the Germans attacked Poland and because they attacked Poland the English attacked the Germans.

There were four major causes of World War 1) The rise of nationalism, (2) a build-up of military might, (3) competition for colonies, and (4) a system of military alliances.

(1) Nationalism is the belief that loyalty to a nation and its political and economic goals comes before any other public loyalty.
(2) Nationalism encouraged public support for military build-ups and for a country’s use of force to achieve its goals.
(3) During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, European nations competed to have colonies in Africa and Asia.  Competition for colonies strained relations among European countries.  Which led to several clashes between certain European countries. (4) The Triple Alliance also known as the Three Emperors’ League was formed in 1881.  Germany’s prime minister, Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, formed a series of alliances to strengthen his country’s security by making Germany an ally of Austria-Hungary and of Italy.
All of these events led up to the assassination of Archduke Frances Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, which triggered World War I.

Okay, well, now that everyone typed with caps locks, and proved their naivity, heres what i have to say.

Blaming Germany, typical un-educated response. While, maybe on the surface it appears to be germany but there are many causes if you dig deeper. Im not gonna list them all but theres alot more then germany at cause here.

First off, Germany and France wanted Alsace-Lorrain, this caused tension. The fear of the rising power of Germany, scared Britain, France and Russia to make an accord or agreement that states that if either is attacked, the the rest will come to aid, this dragged all of europe into the war. anyways... blaming germany because they wanted more land is too narrow minded, and ill tell you this, beyonf the surface youll see most of europe is responsible for world war 2.

Why is everyone being so darn rude? If you want to look for fit boys go somewhere else and stop being so babyish. And yes, it's not right to just blame Germany. It's much more complex than that.

1) Alliances. Britain/France/Russia was the Triple Entente, and Austria-Hungary/Germany/Italy was the Triple Alliance. This divided Europe into two and if two countries went to war, all six of them were dragged in.

2) Imperialism, wanting to expand empires, making Germany wanting war for land.

3) Militarism, meaning rivalry and wanting to be better than the other. This led to countries using force to achieve aims.

4) Blase Attitude. Britain etc didn't take the war seriously and thought it'd be over by Christmas.

5) This led to the assassination in Sarajevo.

There are many causes of the war but what triggered it was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Then a sort of chain reaction happens and Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, and Germany then declares war on Russia.

World War One was started by the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, in Sarajevo Bosnia.  The Austro-Hungarian empire wanted custody of the assassin but Bosnia was unwilling to give him up, and so the Austro Hungarian Empire issued an ultimatum: they said if you (Bosnia) will not give up the assassin for us to deal with, we will use force.  Once Russia Caught wind of this, they told Austria-Hungary that if they mobilize against Bosnia Russia Will mobilize against Austria-Hungary, the Germans in turn Said that if anyone mobilized against Austria-Hungary they would mobilize, and when Russia got in trouble France and Belgium would mobilize against Germany and Austria-Hungary, this in turn Brought Britain in to help her allies France and Belgium. So it turns out that world war one was a foolish blunder made by the pride of countries which ended up costing millions of lives.

world war one was not a good thing obviously and it was probably started with a bullet to someones head. I'm 14 and i can think about it in a way that doesn't necessarily involve the facts, it was a war that was motivated by humans want for peace FOR THEMSELVES and only themselves maybe by getting more land, maybe by creating peace in their mind by killing Franz, it seems humans cant get peace without war and never will . we will battle until death do us part, literally. any fit boys out there?

The World War 1 started for more the one reason
-Firstly France never forgot its defeat in 1970 when they lost the provinces of Alsace and Loraine
-Next Germany as a new empire only 30 years old didn't have as many colonies as other great powers and they wonted more they were also jealous pf British Navy
-The idea of nationalism was also very strong in people at the time as well and people were ready to fight for their country
-The Alliances were a major reason for the beginning of the world war as if two countries went to war their allays would as well which meant most of the world powers
-Finally the assassination of Franc Ferdinand the heir to Austria-Hungarian throne in Sarajevo on 28 Jun. 1914 and the ultimatum of 10 points that Serbia replayed to not being ready to answer to the point where Austria-Hungary asked for their army to enter Serbia and look for the assassin (Gavrilo Princip) them self triggered the world War I

to the point however, WW1 had a variety of different actions contributing to its starting.  The most obvious being the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a teenager in "the Black Hand", aterrorist group determined to get Hungary back from Austria.  Austria had created an alliance with germany and the hungarians had allied with russia, when war broke out between austria hungary, germany and russia were intertwined in battle, and because Britain and france were allied with russia, they were also a part of the war.  Because of Britains empire, it was capable of deploying mass numbers of troops to yhe enemys to fight, germany also had many nations under its power at the time so it became a war between most of thw world, except the U.S.A., they only became involved because of their trading ties with britain.  The Germany became aware of the US tradng with britain and began attacking american vessels, and that was when most of the world was involved, excluding a few countries.

militarism-Building up armed forces.(army and navy.

imperialism-Building up an empire.

Causes
The War started when the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated. They were killed while driving in their car. However many other reasons led to this war, some occurring as far back as the late 1800s. Nationalism, Militarism, Imperialism, and the system of alliances were the four main factors that pressed the great powers towards this explosive war. France and Germany were on the border of war several times when arguing over Morocco. Between 1905 and 1911 they settled each argument with a temporary compromise that left one of the two dissatisfied. During the late 1800s the system of alliances was a fourth factor that led to the War. Otto Von Bismark, the powerful German Chancellor was afraid the France would seek revenge for it's defeat to Germany back in 1871. He then decided to keep France isolated from and without allies. In 1881 Bismark set up a Three Emperors League, a secret agreement among the emperors of Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungry. Germany thought that Italy was a weak point, but they needed them to keep France isolated from allies. France meanwhile was trying desperately trying to get allies. Their opportunity arose when William II became Germany's new chancellor and made the treaty break down. An economic disaster hit Russia later and Russia's Czar sought a loan. The French quickly loaned the money and did other things to make Russia very happy. The alliance between Russia and France was finally settled in 1894. Later on in 1907 the triple alliance was settled too. England, France, and Russia became a serious threat to Germany and that's what brought these six to war.

Because of the different alliances forged in the late 1800's all of Europe was tied in together. Under the terms of the Austro-German Alliance, Germany was obliged to support Austria in any conflict with Russia. Under the terms of the alliance between France and Russia, both parties were obliged to move against Germany if either became involved in a defensive war with Germany. For Germany this meant that a 2-front war with France and Russia was inevitable... so Germany developed the Schlieffen Plan to end the war quickly and decisively--- first war with France and then move over to the slow mobilizer: Russia. The Germans conducted war under the spell of a short-war syndrome. They thought the war could be over in 6 weeks or less.... because of this they were not prepared to fight a long war... but their Schlieffen Plan did not succeed. Germans acted preemptively to avoid serious war; alas, serious war is what they got. The French entered into the war solely to gain back their lost territory of the Alsace-Lorraine... they however underestimated the strength of the German army and were badly beaten in their first attempt to gain control of that territory. Britain was threatened by the development of a German navy as their navy was the best in the world-- they wanted to keep it that way... so they used the violation of Belgian neutrality as an excuse to enter the war on the side of France.
the beginnings of world war one were very complicated... and did not have to do with just one country seeking land. once treaties were signed the major nations of Europe were obligated by their agreements to defend themselves and their allies. Germany did play a major role by attacking France in August of 1914 but only did so in hopes of avoiding what world war one became. we would do well to remember the lessons of the wars of the past to avoid future conflicts of the like. People that don't really know what happened (haven't taken a class or read a book on the subject) have no business contributing to websites like this. it only makes the circle of ignorance wider... and it's a shame.

Holy crap! The only decent answer was given by bookworm. All those 4 things, though, did not lead to the assassination, but rather the assassination in combination with those 4 things cause Europe to spin out of diplomatic control, and into a full scale world war. Existing alliances pulled more and more people in. It was the militarism and nationalism that led to Gavrilo Princip'sassassination of Archduke Ferdinand. want a real answer, ask me neekster_1@hotmail.com

World war one started with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand the Austro-Hungarian Successor, the triple alliance(Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy)were quick to point their fingers at serbia, and declared war on them. Now,Russia the self-proclaimed protector of all Slavic nations, declared war on the triple alliance causing its two other allies Britain and France to enter the war as well.

Chingling is mostly all right but there is one thing.

France decided to force out German workers along there boarder and reclaim a large section of land along the Rhine river. The river used to be one of the original boundary lines between the two countries. Gremany then used there military force to take back the section of land.  Watch the history channel they never stop playing WW1&2 stuff.

Once again FRANCE is to blame for another war.

Serbia started world war one because they killed Franz Ferdinand. Franz was the ruler or whatever of Austria-Hungary. When they killed him it forced Austria-Hungary to declare war on them. The war never would have had to be started if they hadn't assassinated him in the first place. And if you're going to write on here learn how to spell!

world war was was caused by several things.
1. the multiple alliances created by the German Prime minister, Bismarck, were designed to keep the borders of Germany in-tact because of his previous Blood-and-Iron policy which caused Germany to be born. Well, the Kaiser Wilhelm I was largely influenced by Bismarck during the unification of Germany and he decided to die, so the heir - Wilhelm II came in and decided to hate Bismarck and kicked him out of office. Then, Wilhelm II created a foreign policy called Weltpolitik which was designed to expand Germany's borders, increase nationalsim and, generally, interfere with the other Great Powers' spheres of influence. In doing this, he destroyed the multiple alliances that Bismarck created to keep the borders of Germany in-tact and allowed Russia and France and Britian to create the Triple Entente.
2. The Balkans were also known as the 'powder keg' because their politics and economics were really really unstable. Austria-Hungary was busy having fights (diplomatic) with Serbia - who wanted part of Austria-Hungary. This is because the Serbians in Serbia thought that all the Serbs in the Mediterranean should live in Serbia - and Austria-Hungary had a lot of Serbs in one particular area, called Bosnia-Herzegovina. So, Serbia wanted to started a fight, and the terrorist organisation called the Black Hand sent out many assassins to kill the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Finally, they shot him in the head and killed him. This made Austria-Hungary really mad and sent an Ultimatum up to Serbia, who accepted most of the ultimatum - but too late, because when they accepted, Austria-Hungary had declared war. WELL, this caused some nationalistic problems because the Ukrainian people in Austria-Hungary started an uprise against Austria-Hungary, and the Ukranians in Russia decided to follow their counterparts in Austria-Hungary and uprise too. So, Russia joined the war and fought with Serbia and they won. Serbia annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Russia suppressed the Ukraines.
3. The Great Powers decided to be bad and started colonising many countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America. Well, soon enough, there weren't any more places to colonise and the countries were cutting each others' throats for each others' colonies because colonies were seen as prestigious; even though it cost more money to maintain the colonies than simply to let them go. Anyways, all these tensions just got everyone really mad, and, of course, Germany being Germany decided to join the fight with the other Great Powers and made them mad too.
4. Naval Arms race between Germany and Britain. This was when Germany tried to neutralise the threat of Britain at sea. Britain had a navy that was 1.5x (check this number) greater than the second and third largest navies.
5. Blank cheque from Germany to Austria-Hungary stating that germany supported Austria-hungary. It just got Serbia mad during the war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia.
6. Remember the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand? That set everyone off really really bad and everyone decided to call World War One. (it happened last in the causes of world war one, in other words)

No one singular event started World War One.  -Nationalism, Growth of military force, Systems of alliances, and a blasé mind set-  It was the combination of many key components that created the “perfect storm” that ravaged Europe from 1914 - 1918.

The rise of nationalism gripped Europe.  Countries like Germany grew greedy in the scramble for more land.  Germany’s ideas of expansion put pressure on all of Europe.  Hostility grew in the Balkans.  The beginnings of trouble rippled under the surface.

The mind set of Europe was that they could get what they wanted by force, so weapon production went up.  Great Britain went from spending $3.46 on each person’s arms in 1880 to $12.60 in 1900, and $8.23 in 1914.   France went from spending $2.92 in 1870 to $7.07 in 1914.  Germany went from $1.28 in 1870 to $8.19 in 1914.  The growth of others’ armies put everyone on edge, so they in turn built up their armies.  This fueled the nationalists whose power was in military force.

The suspicion that plagued the region lead some nations to form alliances with others.  They pledged that if the other was attacked they would come to their aid.  Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente.  Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the Triple Alliance.

In 1914 the pressure finally buckled.  Serbian terrorists named “The Black Hand” assassinated the Archduke of Austria-Hungary on the Serbian border, triggering the WWI.  Archduke Fraz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne.   That same day, June 28, 1914, The Austria-Hungarian government sent the Serbian government an ultimatum.  They said that the Serbian government was responsible for Ferdinand’s death because they sponsored and praised the terrorists.  Austria-Hungary was not happy with the Serbian’s response and declared war on Serbia.
Because of the web of alliances that split Europe, Germany attacked Russia.  This dragged in Great Britain and France for Russia, and Italy for Germany and Austria-Hungary.  And so began the first horrible war of the world.

o by the way Jay Jay, I am blonde so keep your Derogatory marks to your slef and no dezzz it was just cuz they wanted more land DUHHHHHHHHHH u could use some schooling yourself. it's sad, SSSSSSSS, that you don't care about a war that important, where so many people died, it's really sad. oh and the last time i checked this was a place to ask questions, and i think that is a good question.

ww1 was started when germany wanted more land so that they could be bigger. they desided on poland and when england found out they freaked and said that they would declare war on germany if they attacked. germany then desided to go ahead and do it anyway and england attacked. also you have to take into concideration that franz ferdinad was just assasinated and people were pretty upst about that(franz was the heir to the hungary/austria region) also the military was growing and people were confused. natonalism was a cause and so was racism. i still dont know why america got involved, but its all good. im only 13 and i know all this(even though i might b a blond)

It was started when the emperors(of Austria hungary) nephew was assasinated.

Wow some people ARE pathetic. Anyways.. I just came on here looking as to how World War I started because of a research assignment.. I need to make a flow chart of events (in order) as to what let to the World War.. so far what Ive come up with is that, yes, bookworm up there is right.. those things did lead to the start of the war but it wasn't JUST Nationalism, Imperialism, etc... The creation of the Triple Alliance happened which led to the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie. Then that led to other things like the Invasion of Belgium. Also Germany attacked Poland which is where Britain came in to the war and declared war on Germany. Russia had also mobilized troops.. I hope that may have helped somebody

hehe.. whoa.. i was wrong up top.. Not all of it's wrong but I did some more research. This is the order of events which led to the World War I...
1.Franz Ferdinand, Crown Prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.
2.Germany Invades Belgium & France
3.Britain declares war on Germany; Canada is automatically at war.
4.War Measures Act gets passed...   sorry for the confusion  =P

Franz Ferdinand was the crown prince of the Austrian empire. In 1914 he and his wife went on a visit to Serbia, a country that Austria had a strong influence over. Several Serbian nationalists, who wanted independence from Austria, decided that they would try to kill the prince. On 28th June 1914 they succeeded. His death led to the Austrian government making very strong demands on Serbia. Russia was keen to gain influence in Serbia so they supported the Serbs. Days later the First World War had begun with the Germans declaring war on Russia.

Well actually the causes of world war one were very simple...
1. alliances that were made between 2 or more countries really angered those not involved.
2. imperialism was a major factor in the first world war. countries wanted more land and were willing to do anything to get it.
3. militarism was also a major factor. the military forces were given high profile by the government and eventually led to an arms race between france and germany.
4. and nationalism was a final cause.the europeans were very fond of their country and were very supportive of them.

ok, i agree that blaming germany is narrow minded. Bismark was to blame for provoking tension but he wasn't exactly responsible. Russia and Austria were! If russia didn't want more land in the ottoman empire, then Austria wouldn't have felt they needed land there too, for their own protection.
THEN ...
Austria would have never attacked Serbia (especially if Archduke Ferdinand wasn't so stupid as to go into a country where he was hated)
Russia would have never attacked Austria.
Germany would have never found the perfect moment to go with their Schlieffen Plan, so they would have never invaded belguim, and Britian would have never attacked Germany while defending begluim. And America would have had to get involved with any thing!

Militarism: Was another cause of the war, was similar to the arms race of today. Because Britain had a great navy, Germany wanted a great navy too. Germany and France competed for larger armies. The more one nation built up its army and navy, the more other nations felt they had to do the same.

i think people who wanna give out e-mail addresses and there information and/or wanna look for 'fit boys' should go to a chat room where they would have a chance to talk to people actually looking for the same thing. People here on this are looking for real information about world war one.

I think the trigger of world war one was of course the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand. It all built up by the short and long-term causes in previous years such as the rise to nationalism, and the fight for colonies. All of those causes led to one small trigger, which could have been anything. For this case, it was the assassination. If the assassination did not happen, there would surely be another cause that would have triggered the first world war.

World War One was stared by the assasination of the heir to the Austria-Hungry empire by a Serbian Nationalist. (Nationalist- a person who has pride for their country and would fight to the death for it) so austria-hungry declared war on Serbia. But another large factor was that Germany and France already had an alliance because russia was taking over the ottoman empire at the time, and that France/Russia wanted Alsace-Lorraine. Which then caused an imbalance of power wich caused tension and ultimately led to World War one.

I don't know who thinks that Germany wanted to more land(Poland). Please stop giving the wrong information. Poland was not even created by the time WW1 started. To understand WW1, you must understand what took place in the past. The unification of Germany by otto Bismark in 1871 was one factor that lead to the war. Yes, Germany wanted to expand but no to Poland. As a result of WW1, Poland, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia were created. What is not Iraq, Afghanistan(Ottoman empire at the war) ceased to exist.

Germany is to be blamed for the start of the Great War.
1.   The alliances they made and broke in the early 1900’s lead Europe and the rest of the world to the brink of war.  For example, Wilhelm II let the treaty with Russia expire.  This caused Russia to ally with France and Great Britain in defense.
2.   Germany built up its’ army and navy.  This made Great Britain feel very threatened, so in response, they built up their own navy.  This ultimately raised tensions in Europe.
3.   After the Crisis in Serbia, Germany demanded Russia to stop mobilizing troops in their own defense.  Russia assured them that it was just a precaution.  The German government then declared war on Russia, and to make sure they had both fronts covered, they declared war on France too.  The war declarations were premature and their effects would be felt for generations.

The decisions the German government made in late July 1914 set the world ablaze.  They failed to think their decisions through, and as a result of this failure an entire generation of Europeans ceased to exist within four years.

World War One was a devastating war.  It amounted in a lot of damage to all countries that participated in the war.  While there are many causes contributing to this great war, the primary causes of this war were nationalism, militarism, imperialism, alliances, and Germany’s overall aggressiveness in the years before the war.  Each of those contributed to the outbreak of total war in Europe.
If it were not for the aforementioned causes of World War One, total war would have been avoided and there would have only been a relatively small conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary.  That conflict would have been the result of the assassination of the heir to the dual throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Before World War One all countries in Europe had their own allies.  This helped expand the would-be small conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary.  By 1907, Europe was split in two.  Half of Europe was either in or backed by the Triple Alliance or the Triple Entente.  The Triple Alliance was a defensive treaty and consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.  The goal of the Triple Alliance was to isolate France.  To counter this, France needed to find her own allies so France created the Triple Entente.  The Triple Entente consisted of France, Britain, and Russia.
After Serbia did not respect all the conditions of Austria-Hungary’s ultimatum, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.  Austria-Hungary felt this would be a short war because they thought Italy and Germany would join the fight against Serbia.  However, Serbia would not be alone either.  Russia felt that as the largest Slavic state, it was her duty to protect the smaller Slavic states in the Balkans, including Serbia.  Germany then declared war on France because they thought France would join the war on Russia’s side anyway.  Despite being in the Triple Entente, Great Britain decided to stay out of this war.  Great Britain only joined the war against Germany, when Germany did not respect Belgium’s neutrality.  Japan then enters the war on the side of Great Britain and France in hopes to gain German colonies in China and the Pacific.  Even though Italy was a member of the Triple Alliance, they ended up joining the fight against Germany.  The Triple Alliance was purely a defensive treaty and Austria-Hungary was the aggressor in this conflict, therefore, Italy had and used their right to remain neutral.  However, Italy’s neutrality would only last nine months after the start of the war.  After the nine months of neutrality, Italy joined the war against Germany in return for a share of the spoils after the war.  Needing more allies, Germany convinced The Ottoman Empire to join the war on Germany’s side.  While the Ottoman Empire was weak, they had control of Constantinople which blocked off the Black Sea for the Triple Entente to use.  Germany also convinced Bulgaria to enter the war on Germany’s side.  Three years after the start of the war, America finally joined as a result of British propaganda.  What could have been a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, was now a war between Great Britain, America, France, Russia, Serbia, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Greece, and Portugal and Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire.
Nationalism also contributed to the outbreak of war.  If it were not for the nationalist movements in Germany, Italy, and Serbia, this type of conflict would have never occurred.  Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.  That would not have had happened if Serbia did not wish to have to Serbs living in Austria-Hungary.  Furthermore, Austria-Hungary would not have been able to declare war on Serbia because Germany would not be a unified state.  The nationalism that spread across Europe made it easier for countries to join wars because they knew they would have the strong support of the people.  Nationalism also enabled countries to have conscriptions.
It would have been impossible for World War One to expand beyond Austria-Hungary and Serbia. None of the major powers would have enough support from the people to fight each other properly.  Even if the major powers got in the war, without the conscriptions nationalism enabled them to have, the war would have been short and had few casualties and little damage.
Many of the major powers joined the war as a result of imperialism.  The countries wanted to protect or gain colonies. Japan would not have joined the war if Germany did not have colonies in China and the Pacific.  Japan’s motivation in joining the war was to take control of these colonies, as well as westernizing themselves.  France and Britain needed new markets as a result of the increase in manufacturing due to the Industrial Revolution.  Colonies would give France and Britain these new markets.  By this time, Germany was a growing power and had a few colonies of her own.  Germany would lose these colonies in a war that they lost.  That helped influence France and Britain’s decision to join the war against Germany.  Germany also had a very valuable colony once held by France, Alsace-Lorain.  Alsace-Lorain had many natural resources.  Italy made a few attempts to gain colonies.  However, being one of the weaker nations, Italy was stuck with the colonies no one else wanted.  Luckily for Italy, the Triple Entente agreed to give them a share of the spoils if they joined the war against Germany.  German colonies would be apart of the spoils.
Militarism created much hostilities between non-allied countries.  European countries started to fear each other.  Resulting from this fear, each country built up its own military.  When one country saw a rival build its military that country would build its own military in fear of an invasion.  This is called an arms race.  That is what happened before World War One.  Before German unification, Europe was mostly dominated by France and Britain.  The unification of Germany threw off the balance of power in Europe.  Intending to stop Germany from dominating Europe, France and England built up their militaries.  This frightened Germany and caused them to do the same.  By 1914, the major European powers had these huge militaries that were still growing in fear that their rival would have a slight advantage over their own military.  If it weren’t for militarism, countries would not have been as quick to make alliances.  That would make it impossible for the war to spread.  But, even if the war had spread, there would have been much less damages and casualties because there would be smaller armies.   Germany was a very aggressive country in the years before World War One.  This scared many of the other European countries.  The German Empire was known as Prussia before Prussia forcefully united Germany.  In the time of unification, Prussia was very aggressive in unifying Germany.  Under Bismark, who was known as a war monger, Prussia grew in power and used it against surrounding countries.  Countries did not trust Germany due to their aggressive past as Prussia.  This helped lead to militarism.  A sign of German aggression would also be their attempts to isolate France.  This left France desperate allies and led to the Alliance System.  If Germany had not been as aggressive, militarism and the Alliance System would not have taken place in Europe.
In conclusion, World War One resulted in many losses, losses in money as well as human life.  The leading causes of this incredible war were imperialism, militarism, nationalism, the Alliance System, and German aggression.  It was an uncertain time when countries distrusted each other and total war was simply inevitable.

The Causes of World War I The murder of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on the 28th of June caused the lead up to World War I. The Archduke heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated in his car during a drive in Sarajevo. The assassination was the work of a terrorist group known as the `Black Hand.' This caused Austria-Hungary to call on Germany as an ally and discuss how far Germany would support them. The result of this meeting was the `Blank Cheque' which gave Austria Germany's full support. Austria sent an ultimatum to Serbia asking for `complete surrender' on 23rd July and Serbia agreed 99%. Austria declared war on Serbia on the 28th of July, which created a war that would split Europe in two. War plans and war strategies a crucial to win a war so they must be planned to perfection with no flaws. In World War I Germany believed they had a perfect war plan were as if Russia mobilises then Germany would have forty days to destroy and invade France (Russia's Ally) this flawless plan was known as the Schlieffen. The Schlieffen plan was created by Count Alfred von Schlieffen and was created to protect Germany from fighting a war on two fronts. After Schlieffen died his successor was a man named Helmuth von Moltke and he modified the plan slightly by not invading so much neutral territory. During the war the plan was an absolute failure and Germany had to fight a war on two fronts and lost. The plan was a failure because it had to many flaws e.g. Britain was not brought into the equation, France was stronger than expected. In this war plan trains with strict timetables were used to create an army of 4,000,000 to march into Paris. Once Germany mobilises the trains would not stop or change route for anybody. When the Kaiser asked Moltke to stop the trains going to France, Moltke'sreply was: "That we can't do! The whole army would be thrown into confusion. We would lose any chance of victory." Moltke This proves that the Kaiser was not in control after mobilisation has started. It also proves that the trains could not be stopped by anyone after they have started without complete chaos occurring and defeat enviable. The alliances in Europe created a tension, which would snap, and a major war would occur that would split Europe in two. Alliances during the fifty years before the war created much tension in Central Europe. In 1879 the powerful Germany were joined in an alliance to Austria-Hungary. Three years later had gained another ally in Italy. These three allies were known as the "Central powers" or the "Triple alliance". This formation of three powerful Europe empires began to be feared by Russia, France and Ultimately Britain. This created the French and Russian governments to form an alliance in 1892. This left Britain no choice but to become "ententes" with France and Russia. Other then these main alliances there were some smaller alliances of neutrality. Historian Taylor claims: They were supposed to make Powers secure, they dragged them into danger." Taylor This proves that some alliances were not worth having because they caused more bad then good. After the Archduke was assassinated Austria-Hungary met with Germany to negotiate how far Germany would back Austria. The end result of this meeting was the `Blank Cheque' (would back Austria totally) which gave Austria all the power. Austria used the power against Serbia in July the, which made Russia mobilise which forced Germany to mobilise and put the Schlieffen plan into action. After Germany invaded Belgium to get to France, Great Britain joined to `defend' Belgium war was upon Europe.
The arms race between all the major powers in Europe created much tension as weapons were developing. Between 1870 and 1914, military spending by the European powers increased by 300% this caused a massive increase in armaments. Most of the funds went into building armaments but over 1/3 of the money went to research to create more destructive weapons. Many leaders of the nation believed that victory would come to the country with the most shells, machine guns, barbed wire, trucks, locomotives, mines, grenades, mortars. Apart from this great armaments build up the Germans believed that the key to defeating Britain was her navy. This began the naval race between the Germans (inland country) and Great Britain with the amount as well as the efficiency of these great ships. The Kaiser claimed that: "Only those powers that have great navies will be listened to with respect..." Kaiser The Kaiser believes here that the country with the biggest, strongest navy will demand the most respect. Germany began to challenge Britain into the naval race with many ships being built on the German front. The Britain navy created a battleship, which was superior to any other battleship created by Germany or any other country, they called it HMS Dreadnought. This ship scared Germany because of a British surprise attack destroying their fleet. Germany believed that if they started to create dreadnoughts they could cut the naval lead down from the British. Germany widened the Kiel Canal to release these dreadnoughts into the ocean, a full-scale naval race had begun. After many attempts by the British to stop the naval race it still went on. In 1914 the naval race had finished with Britain had winning with a staggering 29 Dreadnought class ships to Germany's 17. It appeared that Britain could not be overtaken.

The historians have many different viewpoints on the causes of the `Great War'. Volker Berghahn believes that the reasons for the war occurring were Germany started the war to stop trade unions from striking. Another historian named Tuchman claims that the railways were the key because once they started they were not going to be able to stop. Taylor also agreed with Tuchman that the trains and timetables would not stop after Germany mobilized. Taylor claims that: "All the mobilization plans have been timed to the minute, months or even years before and they would not be changed. A change in one direction would ruin them in every other direction." Taylor This shows that if the trains were stopped and/or changed it would destroy the plans. Once set in motion these railways could not be stopped even by the Kaiser. The last historian Joachin Remak claims that the blame cannot be placed on one man or country, he believed that: "All were sinners, all were sinned against." Remak The point of view that is most persuasive is Remak'sbecause the blame cannot be blamed on one country because there are many causes of the war that have been brought up by many different countries.

The Germans believed war was inevitable. A number of reasons fueled these beliefs:

Trouble in the Balkans
Industry rivalry between Britain and Germany
Colonial rivalry between Britain and Germany
General Rivalry between Britain and Germany
Alliances
(a few other reasons)

Following the Germans belief that war was inevitable, General Von Schlieffen formed a plan that would result in the Germans taking a lot of land in a very short time. This plan (Schlieffen Plan) was updated every year, in accordance with French and Russian military spending, amongst other things.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand proved to be the vital trigger that would set it all off. The Germans needed this trigger so that they could put the Schlieffen Plan into action. Had the alliances not been there, Germany would not have been involved with the assassination.

The Triple Alliance (Germany, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy) were formed. The Triple Entente (Great Britain, France and Russia) was the other alliance. After the assassination, Austria blamed Serbia for the assassination of the heir and Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia, sticking up for it's own race, basically said "If you attack Serbia, we will attack you."

Germany (Austria's ally) replied with "You attack Austria, we attack you. I suggest you stay out of this."

France (Russia's ally) took the same attitude towards Germany. And so all the Alliance and Entente were against each other. Except Britain.

Britain planned to stay out of European affairs, but when Germany broke the Treaty of Neutrality, Britain stepped in. The Germans did not expect this. All countries were now involved and there was a full-out war on.

The war was supposed to be over by Christmas, but due to new weapons and the mentality of commanders, trench warfare ensued and a four-year stalemate made the First World War much longer than was ever expected.

In summary, the First World War ocurred for a number of reasons (listed above), but the trigger that set it all off was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Some of the things I have read on here can best be described as imbecilic. Many people have tried to over-simplify the causes of one of history's greatest astrocities. Firstly, one must remember due to an arms race between Germany and Britain, the two countries were growing fearful of one another. Germany wished for an empire of her own and Britain was reluctant to have such a powerful neighbour competing with colonising the world. Alliances soon began to form and many other factors such as trade blocs and nationalistic slurs created an atmospher of incredible tension. When a Serbian rebel shot the nephew of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand,Austria-Hungary responded by declaring war on serbia. In response, Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary. Germany, an ally of AH, chose to declare war on Russia. Soon Europe was plunged into all-out war. America and other colonies di not join in till later, although other idiots on this page appear to disagree. I am surprised that so many of you arrogant illiterates can look down on others when you barely know the facts yourselves. I am surprised that you can use a computer, let alone read or write. As to those who have given a competent and correct answer, well done, or those searching for the truth, good luck.

The principal architect of the peace settlement devised at the conference, Austrian foreign minister Prince Klemens von Metternich, believed that the key to making peace durable was the balance of power. According to this diplomatic principle, the major nations of Europe should distribute power relatively evenly among themselves to deter any one of them from seeking dominance over the continent. If any country were to attempt to disturb the balance of power, the others would oppose it as an alliance

The First World War had many causes; the historians probably have not
yet discovered and discussed all of them so there might be more causes
than what we know now.  The spark of the Great War was the
assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of
Austria-Hungary, and his wife by a Serbian nationalist on the morning
of June 28, 1914, while traveling in a motorcade through Sarajevo, the
capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Archduke was chosen as a
target because Serbians feared that after his ascension to the throne,
he would continue the persecution of Serbs living within the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Serbian terrorist organization, the Black
Hand, had trained a small group of teenage operatives to infiltrate
Bosnia and carry out the assassination of the Archduke. It is unclear
how officially active the Serbian government was in the plot. However,
it was uncovered years later that the leader of the Black Hand was
also the head of Serbian military intelligence. In order to understand
the complexity of the causes of the war, it is very helpful to know
what was the opinion of the contemporaries about the causes of the
Great War. In the reprint of the article "What Started the War", from
August 17, 1915 issue of The Clock magazine published on the Internet
the author writes: "It is thought that this war that is been ongoing
for over a year, began with the assassination of the Archduke Francis
Ferdinand. However, many other reasons led to this war, some occurring
as far back the late 1800's. Nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and
the system of alliances were four main factors that pressed the great
powers towards this explosive war."

According to the article above, the author stresses that the
nationalism was one of the primary causes of the war. In the ninetieth
and twentieth centuries, especially after the French Revolution
nationalism was becoming a powerful force in Europe so people that had
the same culture, language wanted their own country. And that was the
problem for the government of Austria-Hungary that did not want to
lose their power and control. The Slavs in the southern part of the
empire were their main concern since they wanted to join up to Serbia.
Militarism is the second cause according to the article above, which
comes after the nationalism. To understand what the author means by
militarism one should be familiar with the situation of the world in
the beginning of the century, which was the result of both industrial
and democratic revolutions. Britain at that time was the largest
empire in the world, and it also had the largest navy. The navy was so
big and strong because the Britons needed to protect their empire and
maintain the sea routes between the different colonies. The Kaiser
William II of Germany hated and envied Britain for having a stronger
navy than his. He increased the German navy and built many warships.
Britain responded with building more ships and increasing its navy
too. This started a race for building more and better warships and it
created tension and competition between those two countries.
Imperialism and the system of alliances are the last two major causes
of the War. There was a quarrel between France and Germany about
controlling the colonies, and especially Morocco, which leads to a
greater conflict, the Great War. Europe at that time was divided into
two rival alliance systems: Triple Entente that included Great
Britain, France, and Russia and the Triple Alliance, which included
the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and eventually the
Ottoman Turkish Empire.

Austria-Hungary must take a large proportion of any blame for the
outbreak of war in 1914. The reason for Germany's part in the causes
involves Germany's "blank Check" policy. Before sending its ultimatum
to Serbia, Austria needed to be sure of the support of its ally,
Germany. Such support was forthcoming in the form of a telegram to the
Emperor Franz Joseph on 6 July 1914. The telegram has become known to
history as the "Blank Check". In order to balance the power, France
and Russia signed an alliance. Russia saw itself as the 'protector of
Slavs' in the war, and immediately mobilized. When the war began, the
German decision that if they were going to have to fight Russia and
France, they would strike at France first according to its Schlieffen
Plan, and then turn West to Russia. Germans believed that Russia at
the time was unprepared for war, and that it will take a long time for
Russia to mobilize its army.

On July 28, 1914 Austria declared war against Serbia. Russia responded
by partially mobilizing against Austria as a  'protector of Slavs',
and Germany insisted that Russia immediately demobilize. Russia
refused to do so, and on August 1 and 3 declared war on Russia and
France. When war was declared in August people involved on all sides
felt that it would be a short war, and will be over by Christmas.
In order for Germany to accomplish its Schlieffen Plan, Germany
occupied Belgium. By August most of Belgium was under German
occupation and the Schlieffen Plan appeared to be going well, but it
brought Britain into the war because they had made a treaty with
Belgium before, and Schlieffen Plan involved the invasion of neutral
Belgium.

One of the problems during the Great War that military staffs and
thinking were far behind new weapons and logistics. In other words
military commanders like General Haig or Marshall Joffre were not
quite ready to the war with it's modern weapons and new technologies
such as machine guns, bunkers and railroad systems that allowed to
bring troops quicker into defensive positions. This was the first war
in the human history where the weapons of defense were superior to
offensive. The First World War is also known as a war of attrition. In
order to protect themselves from modern weapons, men dug in along the
whole of the Western Front. They built networks of trenches that ran
500 miles. The First Battle of the Marne was the war's first major
turning point. German army has almost reached its objective Paris in
accordance with the Schlieffen Plan, but the Battle of the Marne
stopped the movement of Germans in the west. Unfortunately for the
Germans, the plan did not work as expected. The result was a partial
success, which failed in its ultimate goal of knocking the French army
out of the war early. The Battle of the Marne marked the end of the
Schlieffen Plan, the end of movement in the war and the start of
Trench Warfare. Eventually the trenches were stretching 25,000 miles,
from Switzerland to the North Sea. On the other hand, Germans were
much successful on the Eastern Front and had a series of quick
victories over Russia. Only in a single Battle of Tannenberg 92,000
Russian prisoners were taken. After the failure of the German
offensive, both sides made various local attempts at achieving
breakthroughs. Most of these attempts failed due to the effects of
modern weapons.

The First World War was the first war to use poison gas as a military
weapon. Germans also had the first submarines and used them to
blockade Britain by sinking British ships. The sinking of Lusitania is
the famous example of the submarine warfare during the World War I.
The Lusitania had civilians on board, where 100 passengers were
American citizens. After sinking Lusitania a letter was sent to the
German Government by President Wilson to warn the German government
against killing Americans citizens.

In October 1915 Ottoman Turkish Empire enters war on German side.
Turkish army began invasion of Russia and was very successful until
Great Britain attacked Turkey. British, French, Australian and New
Zealand were unsuccessful in invading Turkey. The action was confined
to the Dardanelles Strait and the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula near
Istanbul. The same year, Italy had withdrawn from the Triple Alliances
when war started, and on the Eastern Front Russians were loosing their
lands and over 750,000 soldiers were taken as prisoners. By the end of
1915 the whole society of Europe mobilized for war. This was to be the
world's first Total War. Women were taking on the jobs, and most male
population was sent to war. The total war started when Germans used
their first gas attack:

Gassing was the start of total war, because it broke all limits, the
social taboos, the gentleman's etiquette of other wars. Sometimes the
shot would miss the mark and kill innocent civilians. Before the
introduction of gas bombing, soldiers found it easier to overlook the
fact that they were fighting on opposite sides of the field, because
they had no personal motivation to fight.

In 1916 there 139 British and French Divisions were fighting against
117 German Divisions. Two sides were facing each other across the "no
man's land" of mud, shell holes and barbed wires. Sometimes the
distance between two fighting powers was so close that on first
Christmas both sides were singing carols to each other. One can find a
good description of trenches by reading Erich Remarque's novel "All
Quite on the Western Front" were he gives the reader some insight and
a look at a group of young German friends who are also fighting in
World War I.  It covers the horror of this war through the eyes of a
young German solider, Paul Baumer. This book is not like other books
and stories that glorify wars. It tells the horrors of war in detail.
The story recalls the bloody details of bombing, gunfire, gas,
hand-to-hand combat, barbed wire, trench warfare and etc. Remarque
tells the story in the first person that makes the reader feel as if
he or she is one of the soldiers, that makes the novel even more
dramatic for the reader:

We see men living with their skulls blown open; we see soldiers run
with their two feet cut off, they stagger on their splintered stumps
into the next shell-hole; a lance-corporal crawls a mile and a half on
his hands dragging his smashed knee after him; another goes to the
dressing station and over his clasped hands bulge his intestines; we
see men without mouths, without jaws, without faces …

The two biggest and horrifying battles of the World War I are the
Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme. John Keegan, a military
historian in his interview tells about the Battle of Somme: "It was
the biggest barrage that had ever been. So, they were firing over
100,000 shells a day; relentless, relentless banging and booming of
this tremendous bombardment. So loud, you could hear it in England, if
the wind was in the right direction (60 or 70 miles away).
Over million soldiers were killed on both sides only in a single
battle of Somme during 1916. The second biggest battle of Verdun was
fought at the cost of the French Army, and it is often compared to a
sausage machine, because 315,000 Frenchman died. The human kind had
never sees such battles throughout the whole history, with so many
losses, which was quite shockfull experience for the soldiers who
fought the First World War. This war resulted shortages in practically
everything, and rising prices. By the end of 1916 America was still
not involved in the war.

Fateful year of 1917 marked the beginning of the modern world. Several
important events took place in 1917. First and the most important
event was the Russian Revolution and the rise of a Communist Power in
the World. The same year America enters the war against Germany. Two
great non-European leaders with two different ideas of what is good
for humanity emerge, and the European History becomes a World History.
Vladimir Ilich Lenin, who was hiding in Switzerland at that time, was
helped by some German agents to be able to go to Russia in a sealed
train. Germans helped Lenin, because they knew that if the Revolution
occurs, the war with Russia would eventually finish. As a matter of
fact Lenin and the Bolsheviks takes over the country on November 7,
1917. Everything that was planned by Germans came true and Russians
made peace with Germany. The Western front was the only 'show in
town', and Germans moved all their power from Eastern to a Western
Front to break through the line of the enemy.

In March of 1918 Russia signed a treaty in Brest-Litovsk which put a
formal end to the war and agreed to stop fighting. Russia was also
forced to give up some of its land to the enemy. The war that was
supposed to be over by Christmas seemed endless; however, in 1918,
after great Franco-American Offensive Germany gave up, and became a
liberal Republic. It happened at 11:00 am, on November 11, after 4
years and over 8 million military deaths on both sides. Germany agreed
to President Wilson's 14 points, issued in January 1918 where Germany
agreed no to have secret treaties with other countries, most
importantly to end submarine warfare and to free the seas, to give up
their colonial claims and etc.

Germany also had to take the responsibility for the cause of the Great
War and accordingly pay reparations to Allies. By signing the treaty
Germany also agreed to disarm, and give up the colonies. The world war
one had tremendous consequences on the world. "World War I killed
fewer victims than World War II, destroyed fewer buildings, and
uprooted millions instead of tens of millions, but in many ways it
left even deeper scars both on the mind and on the map of Europe. The
Old World never recovered from a shock."  According to many
historians, and in particular Edmond Tailor the trench warfare was the
cruelest among all wars since the Ice Age. The reason why historians
think that way is because the people of the XIX and early XX century
were not ready to this kind of war. People were very optimistic about
the future with all the great inventions. "The last twenty years of
the 19th Century, say 1880 to 1900, those years were characterized by
an immense optimism. It was thought that public health, invention, the
telegraph, the telephone, ultimately the wireless and the radio, were
going to civilize human life in a way that it had never been civilized
before. And, then, all of a sudden, what happens is ghastly war breaks
out and spoils everything."  The inventions that were supposed to
improve the standards of living for humanity in fact made the war more
tragic. "The age that died in 1914 was a brilliant one - so
extravagant in its intellectual and aesthetic endowments that we who
have come after can hardly believe in its reality."   In Eric
Remarque's novel "All Quite on the Western Front" one can clearly see
what war had done to the people, especially to the young generation
who fought it. The soldiers who fought in the Great War often lost
their interest in life. The only significance in the lives of the
soldiers was comradeship. Eric Remarque also mentions in his novel
what was the opinion of the soldiers about the progress, "We are not
youth any longer. We don't want to take the world by storm. We are
fleeing. We fly from ourselves. From our life.  … The first bomb, the
first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity,
from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we
believe in the war." That was the mentality of the soldier of the
Great War. Nothing in the world meant anything to a soldier, other
than the "war".   Remarque also shows in his novel how meaningless was
the war for the soldier. There is a place in the novel were Paul kills
a French soldier, and feels very guilty about it. It shows one more
time how artificial was the cause of the war. There was no real cause
why German would hate a Frenchmen and voiceovers. Erik Remarque shows
that when Paul talks to a dead French soldier where he says, "Comrade,
to-day you to-morrow me. But if I come out of it, comrade, I will
fight against this, that has struck us both down; from you, taken
life-and from me-? Life also."  Despite being alive, Paul considers
his life without any meaning after all the horrible experiences of the
war. All people who came out of the First World War were either
physically or psychologically wounded.

The impact of the First World War is still with us. In many respects
the events of modern Europe are a direct result of what happened in
1914 -1919. "Had there be a World War I, of course have been no
Second…"  Adolph Hitler himself was a product of the First World War.
World War I also gave Lenin an opportunity to overthrow the government
in Russia and proclaim communism.
and im 14! working hard to get off the streets lol.! bless

It all started in 1914 because of four major the rise of nationalism, a build-up of military might, competition for colonies, and also a system of military alliances.
The way world war one started is that the Germans wanted more land so they went after Poland’s land  which they wanted it as their own. The English people found out that the Germans were going to attack Poland so they said they would attack them if they did so.
The Alliances were Britain, France and Russia as The Triple Entnte and They were against the Triple alliance which is made up of  Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy. The Alliances divided Europe into two and if two countries went to war all six were dragged in.

On 28 June, in Sarajevo, Gavrilo Princip (a Slav nationalist) assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for the killing and because Europe was linked by a series of diplomatic alliances - Austria-Hungary/Germany/Italy (Central Powers) and Britain/France/Russia (Triple Entente/Allied forces) - the affair escalated into full-scale war.

All the countries had a part to play in starting ww1.  There were many alliances between countries so even when a tiny event happened countries would back each other up a fights would start.

When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group, it led to a series of events and countries started to declare war on each other.

On august 1st 1914 Germany declares war on Russia

On the 3rd Germany declare war on France

On the 4th  Great Britain declares war on Germany.

World war one was started when the arch-duke franz ferdinand and his wife, countess sophie, were shot in sarejevo which was the capital of Bosnia by gavrilo princip who was member of the BLACK HAND GANG, Austria-Hungary were angry at serbia thinking that serbia had employed the group of students to kill franz, A-H declared war on serbia, and germany decided to try and get to paris in France through belgium, and then go back and attack russia, because they thought it would take Russia longest to mobilize because it was so cold, but russia mobilized quickly, and outnumbered the germans 4-1, germany never got as far as Paris becxause the invaded belgium to get to france and belgium denied then access, so they just attacked them. On the 4th of August 1914 we attacked germany because they invaded belguim trying to get through to france, we then set up trenches and fought such battles as the battle of the ypres and the battle of somme, which we sadly failed, but we still won the war!

I LIKE MONKEYS

The pet store was selling them for five cents a piece. I thought that odd since they were normally a couple thousand each. I decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth. I bought 200. I like monkeys.

I took my 200 monkeys home. I have a big car. I let one drive. His name was Sigmund. He was retarded. In fact, none of them were really bright. They kept punching themselves in their genitals. I laughed. Then they punched my genitals. I stopped laughing.

I herded them into my room. They didn't adapt very well to their new environment. They would screech, hurl themselves off of the couch at high speeds and slam into the wall. Although humorous at first, the spectacle lost its novelty halfway into its third hour.

Two hours later I found out why all the monkeys were so inexpensive: they all died. No apparent reason. They all just sorta' dropped dead. Kinda' like when you buy a goldfish and it dies five hours later. Damn cheap monkeys.

I didn't know what to do. There were 200 dead monkeys lying all over my room, on the bed, in the dresser, hanging from my bookcase. It looked like I had 200 throw rugs.

I tried to flush one down the toilet. It didn't work. It got stuck. Then I had one dead, wet monkey and 199 dead, dry monkeys.

I tried pretending that they were just stuffed animals. That worked for a while, that is until they began to decompose. It started to smell real bad.

I had to pee but there was a dead monkey in the toilet and I didn't want to call the plumber. I was embarrassed.

I tried to slow down the decomposition by freezing them. Unfortunately there was only enough room for two monkeys at a time so I had to change them every 30 seconds. I also had to eat all the food in the freezer so it didn't all go bad.

I tried burning them. Little did I know my bed was flammable. I had to extinguish the fire.

Then I had one dead, wet monkey in my toilet, two dead, frozen monkeys in my freezer, and 197 dead, charred monkeys in a pile on my bed. The odour wasn't improving.

I became agitated at my inability to dispose of my monkeys and to use the bathroom. I severely beat one of my monkeys. I felt better.

I tried throwing them way but the garbage man said that the city wasn't allowed to dispose of charred primates. I told him that I had a wet one. He couldn't take that one either. I didn't bother asking about the frozen ones.

I finally arrived at a solution. I gave them out as Christmas gifts. My friends didn't know quite what to say. They pretended that they like them but I could tell they were lying. Ingrates. So I punched them in the genitals.

I like monkeys

Okay so what people are saying is that ww1 was started by the triggerment of Gavriol Princip(the Serbian guy who shot at Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire)and that Yugoslavia didn't "start" the war but in a way it was already started. Gavriol acted more of just a trigger and the whole "war" was like a gun just waiting to be pulled. So everything was there someone just had to notice and act apon it....right?

WWI started because of this selfish world where everyone wants more. Only the elite (famous) people are the ones who write the history we learn today in school. You'll never really know what caused it. The assasination of the Archduke was only a tiny excuse to start the war: just another harmless country to blame a whole world war on. WORLD WAR ONE IS EVERY COUNTRY'S FAULT.

But still guys, those that go on here to pompously go around saying they know everything (or at least put down those which don't know everything that they know) really need to check themselves.
They may know something that you don't and when you need to know the answer, perhaps they wont help you

Anybody who thinks history is as simple as "wanting land" needs to go to school.

The causes of WW1 are far ranging, with war guilt either being attributed solely to Germany or to the international system as a whole. one of the hundreds of causes offered by historians is the fact that the entente alliance system broke up the fluidity of "balance of power politics" which has kept Europe from major war since the Franco- Prussian incident

World War I was not caused due to any one country. Every country in their own way responsible for this great mishap. And there are many countries that we can easily blame and say that they started it but that would be wrong.
For example we can say that Austria Hugary started the war by sending their archduke at the wrong time to serbia, on Serbia's national day when nationalistic feelings were sure to be very strong, but then Serbia should have not really killed the archduke and hence created more misunderstandings that were there already.

World War One was mainly started because Bosian terrorists attacked and murdered Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife.  As of this, Austria has a reason to attack and destroy Serbia.  This led to more countries joining the war.

The war was lead by two groups, they were:
Central Powers (bad guys) : Austria-Hungarian Empire, Germany and Turkey.
Allied Powers (good guys) : Australia, England (British empire), Russia, Italy, France, Serbia, Greece, Japan also USA whom joined in 1917.

The war was also started when Germany wanted to take of smaller countries (imperialism).

world war 1 started, because of the idea of nationalism, which is the belief that your country is the best country out of all the world.  Germany thought that no other coutry was better, and it had too much pride in itself, which led to them not wanting to give goods to other countries, while they still thought they should recieve from the other countries.  the other countries got fed up with Germany's pride and wanted to wipe them off the map

What a bunch of sad people. People who have nothing better to do than "troll" around the internet are beyond pathetic. UGH.

Britain was shady. They didn't tell Germany that if they attacked the French then they would in-turn fight back. All the alliances created a defensive atmosphere and when the Archduke was assonated, the war began.

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife was not a reason for starting WWI but it was an excuse. Austria Hungary had been looking for an excuse to start war on Serbia for a long time, and with the blank Cheque that Germany gave them they became confident of giving Serbia an ultimatum, which they were sure of that they would not accept. The blank Cheque basically meant that Germany would give Austria Hungary support if they started war with Serbia, whenever they needed the support

what happened was Serbia was trying to get Bosnia to join their cause for independence however Bosnia was still under Austrian control.Austria sent its army into Bosnia and practiced there to try and keep Bosnia from joining Serbia by showing off their might.Archduke Ferdinand was there in a parade to support the troops. He was then assassinated by Gavrillo Princip of the black hand nationalist group form Serbia.
Austria then issued an ultimatum to Serbia and they agreed to five out of the six demands. Austria wanted all six to be agreed to and they weren't so they declared war on Serbia. This caused Russia to mobilize its army as they were allies of Serbia. This then interfered with the German Schlieffen plan. SO Germany mobilized its armies and declared war on Russia and then France. The Schlieffen plan called for them to go through Belgium but the Belgium king wouldn't allow it. And when they invaded Belgium Britain was forced to declare war on Germany because of their secret alliance with Belgium. SO that is how World War I was started.

i think people are mixing up world war one and world war two. world war two was when Hitler and all of Germany tried to take over europe....world war one started when Archduke Frances Ferdinand was assassinated, but there were many other reasons and it's very complicated, alot more so that world war two. everyone should get the facts before they go tell other people off for asking a simple question. now go out and learn your facts from a book, those are more reliable than people's people's comments on websites.

WWI started because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated . he was the heir to Austria-Hungary. like already stated. this caused big problems. people didn't like this so they kinda blew up at some other . and then.... somewhere in there allies were formed. whats funny is... if you ask any one about France what their solute is it s |o| the| are arms and the o is the head. so ya. but aside from that. you should research on google. or ask jeeves or dogpile. or what ever you prefer. don't listen to the people that use all caps and tell u you're stupid. so ya. thats about all i know about how the starting of WWI was.

July 28
Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

July 31
As an ally of Serbia, Russia announces full mobilization of her armed forces.

August 1

What led to start WW1 was the boer war... which was war between the British and Boer people, dutch. It was in the first place  wr between the boer people and the zulu's  for the land the Boer people were living on, so Britian saw this clash between then and decided to join in wanting peace. But what Britiain didn't know ws tht during their war between the Boer people was that Germany was helping the boer people out by sending them, by ship, weapons, in which they could use for battle and hopefully use to defeat the British. Britian then found this out and cut off Germny's supply of weapons to the Boer people which eventully led to the defeat of the boer people... the british really never wanted the lnd the boer people and the zulu people in the beinging were fighting for, all they wanted was peace... so the3y let the boer people still live there but when the boer discoverd huge amounts of gold ... Britain tightened the reigns around "there" borders so they could get their hands on this gold... then the zuluz wanted it etc.

That led to the WWI
BUT
what REALLY
started WWI
was the assasination of the archduke or Austria!

I REALLY hoped this helped you students :)

It was mostly one thing leading to another, Austria's prince Franz and his wife were assassinated in Serbia by a radical group called the Black Hand. This enraged Austria who had an agreement with Germany, this would force Germany to fight against Serbia with Austria. But Serbia was allied with Russia, and somehow kind of indirectly with France, afraid of being attacked from both sides Germany told France to stay out of it, they were wishy washy in their reply so they decided to march on France through Belgium. But Belgium who was neutral at the time refused to let Germany through, which caused them to attack Belgium, things kind of snowballed from there.

The war officially began in 1914 when an assasin from Bosnia assasinated Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife whilst they were in their car on the streets of Serbia. Ferdinand's uncle, the Emperor of Austria-Hungary was freaked. So guess what? War! Central Powers versus the Allies! Dudes, I'm only in third yead and I know that! Duh! (P.s.) Tension between Germany and France was brewing since the 1870s so it finally made an excuse there. Now if you don't mind, I've gotta finish my homework.

My god. The current state of Internet abuse is just.. Well, it pains my heart.
Regardless, I believe it was Austria-Hungary who is responsible. After the assassination of the Archduke, A-H delivered Serbia an ultimatum requesting Austria-Hungarian occupation in Serbia and the right to investigate the assassination. However, Serbia denied the occupation. This caused A-H to declare war in 1914. Russia was brought in to protect Serbia and thus declared war on A-H. This took Germany in and subsequently led to the involvement of the more prominent European powers due to previous alliances.

Yes, to tell someone to go to school and learn something is ridiculous. They came here precisely to ask questions and learn something. That is admirable, not "stupied".

I agree, you can't blame Germany. The fact of the matter is that the causes of World War I stretch 60 years before the war actually turned into a world war. Things escalated from all directions and in my opinion appears to be a very necessary step for the maturity of the national phase of our world history. Although I believe that every measure should be taken to avoid war, I think it is intriguing to think that World War I was the first act in the history of the world where basically the entire world were involved in something together. It was almost like some weird, twisted dance.

Serbians living under autsro -Hungarian rule, dislikes being under Austrian control.serbs  wanted their independence so that they could join serbia , the mother land.therefore they formed the serbian nationalist group called the "black hand" . their motto was "union with serbia or death". to show their protest the "black hand" conspired and carried out the hit on the archduke and his wife.1 erupted after this event. (p.z this is the real awnser by the way i got it out of my history book)

WW1 was the combination of greed, power and revenge(boy, dont i sound posh)
The assassination of Heir to be Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was in no way the start of the war, he simply "fueled the fire" to boiling point between the rivaling countries.
If anything, he was the "poster child" of the war.As for Germany's involvement of the war, no one can truly be surprised at their input.Their Germans, they simply cant help themselves (my bad). But to stick up for the zonkies for a minute, they were doing no more than the British did when they colonized during the revolution period.
So all in all, go AUSSIES.

WW1 was created by fear of the English not having alliances with others and was forced to lead

Also the main reson was of course Franz Ferdinand was assasinated creating conflict between countries. Austria then declared war with Serbia and be cause the English sighned the treaty to defend belgium who was also declared war at had to pretect them. Making Turkey and Germany backing up Austria and Russia and English also the Australians backing up Serbia

"There are many causes of the war but what triggered it was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Then a sort of chain reaction happens and Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia..." then followin with Russia declaring war on Austria-Hungary and Germany under alliance comes to Austria's aid and declares war on Russia and while at it uses the recent developed military plans and Blitzkrieg to attack France and Poland while crossing through neutral territory which pulls Britain in... thats pretty much a sum of what happened!

And christina you are partialy right. You forgot to mention that the Austrian king dude guy was assassinated. That is when Germany declaired war on England and vis verser. And then all of Europe waged and declaired war. Germnay did want more land. And the americans didnt enter until 1917 because they didnt want to break the monroe doctrine which said that the united states would stay in the western hemispher and England would stay in the east. We were not gonna enter the war but England kept begging us and we caved in. Same thin in world war two. Dont leave a comment unless you know your stuff!!!

Many peeps think its all the germans fault but they have almost nothing to do with what happened, they only like 1 eighth of the reason.

It started because Frans Ferdinand, Arch Duke of Austro-Hungarian Empire, wanted Trialism to be granted to the slavic people in Bosnia.  He went to the Balkans to pitch Trialism and got shot.  (Not only him, but his wife also)  This would start WWI.  Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia came to help Serbia, Germany supported Austria.  France and Great Britain enters on the side of Russia.

There are many causes of the war but what triggered it was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Then a sort of chain reaction happens and Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, and Germany then declares war on Russia.

Russia seing germany declare war on serbia backs serbia by declaring war on germany so because russia is part of triple entente french declares war on germany, germany not wanting to fight both russia and france at the same time invades belgium to get to france...(belgium is neutaral)invading belgium makes britian declaure war on germany..start of ww11

An assassination of Archduke France Ferdinand, Austro-Hungarian throne was the reason behind WW1. Behind this assassination were Serbian terrorists. At this time many countries were preparing for some kind of war and the assassination of Ferdinand was coincided as a perceived threat from Serbia thus WW1 started.

Honestly... i came here to help for a high school final.I've look through just to find the right answer for everyone. Austria Declared war on Serbia. This was because someone in Serbia assassinated the guy in Austria. After that all of their allies came in to help out. by that time everyone was fighting everyone and THEN Germany tried to take some land. It wasn't Germany's fault. It was Austria that started it. They were too trigger happy. Even so that was the past and this is the present. there is no need to argue over it anymore or assign a blame.

World One did not start because poland was pretty who ever posted that *^#$. WW1 started because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assinated he was a part of the royal family in austria-hungary by a slovic minourity rights group called the Black Hand.Austria-Hungary blamed serbia for these problem(considering that were most slovics had come from)and this triggered a war between them, but serbia has a alliance with Russia and GERMANY!!! had one with aurstria. So when Austria attacked Serbia Russia attaked Austria and Germany attacked Russia lol, but Russia has an alliance with France so France then attacked germany. There were other alliances between them leading to more countries. But Britain only come into play when King Kaiser had divised a plan to break French strong holds wich are located on the border between France and germany. The plan was to send a some troops to the strong holds to fight but he wanted to move his another portion of his troops through belgium coming around attacking the capitol and crippling there forces. But Belgium had refused to let GErman forces pass through , so germany retaliates by attacking Belgium and Belgium had a secret alliance with Britain so therefore Canada and the US had a alliance with britain , so obviously Canada and the Us had to mobilize there troops and also join in the battle.

Well, reading some of the texts in caps is just as painful as getting a cut by a sharp razor.

World War I was the result of leaders' aggression towards other countries which was supported by the rising nationalism of the European nations. Economic and imperial competition and fear of war prompted military alliances and an arms race, which further escalated the tension contributing to the outbreak of war.

You're all partially right.  World war one was an invasion of what is known as Iraq.  Whew, lost some of you here.  British colonies had vast resources in oil and the Germans wanted their own.  The British fleet had just switched from coal to oil burning ships and now need lots of oil for industrial production and their battleships.
Germany was building the Berlin-Bagdad railway for transportation of oil...the rail line to the border was the famous orient express line.  When Germany knocked at the door of the oil reserves the first units of what would be world war one where sent to Basra to stop the Germans.  Fernande was not that great a guy to start a war over.  WWI was a colonial struggle over natural resources in the middle east.

The Serbs jumped in a car with the future ruler of Austria Hungry. He fired two shots what for Duchess Sophia and the other in the Arch Duke. They were both killed. Austria Hungry declared war on the Serbs. Russia steeped into Help the Serbs in the war. When Germany saw Russia entered in the help, Germany stepped in to help Austria Hungry. That is when each country formed an alliance with another. One by one the countries were brought into the war. Russia left the war in 1917 and that same year the USA entered the war since Germany sank four US merchant ships. That was the beginning of WWI.

The Middle East is being reshaped according to the ideological aspirations of Zionists and the exigencies of a viciously-competitive energy market. Behind the bombed-out ruins of Qana and the endless sorties laying Lebanon to waste, are the tireless machinations of the energy giants, the corporate media, the banking establishment and Israel.

Austria-Hungary prime minister, Frances Ferdinand, was killed by some 17 teen year old boys from Serbia when he was visiting Bosnia- which belonged to Austria- Hungary, but Serbia wanted the land. This mad Austria-H mad. Germany told them they would help them in a war. Serbia had alliances with Russia and Russia had alliances w/ France, and France had alliances w/ Great Britain. This is how it started but the country's did have their selfish reasons too.
Oh, and Italy was not in a triple alliance with Austria- Hungary and Germany because they didn't want to be part of a war. The only reason they changed their mind was because Britain said that if they helped them and if they won the war, Italy would get all the colonies in Africa that belonged to Britain. how ever Britain won the war but didn't keep their promise. So thats why Italy helped Germany in ww2.
Adios!!

To all the Girls out their women rule and we know it!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Nationalism was  a main cause because all the counties wanted to own a lot of land.  When countries got wealthy by owning land other nations would get jealous and try and take away or get land.

The start of WW1 is plain and simple........OIL. in the late 19th century the german govenment had put forward a plan to extend the berlin to constinantinople (now istanbul) railway line by 800km into bagdad, this would give germany a trade line direct with its colonies but more importantly a direct link to oil, this means it could end all other trade with europe and go it alone and seeing as the german navy fleet had just been coverted to oil (as opposed to england france and russia's coal fueled ships) it made germany a major player in europe, the u.k hated this and fought in the courts to get the railway put on hold, it worked and the railway never got compleated as war broke out due to the other reasons mentioned here. I am from the u.k and i can honestly say that we never, not once learned about WW1 in school, there seems to be a social taboo in the media about mentioning the economic reasons for going to war. The assination of archduke franz ferdinand as a reason for war....please i mean come on, nobody is that popular

World War 1 began after the Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 by a group of Serbian nationalists. This event began the struggle between Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian government.  From here on one thing led to another. Austria-Hungary, unsatisfied with Serbia's response to her ultimatum declared war on Serbia. Once this happened all the treaty’s that had been established in the past were no longer being followed.
Russia announced mobilization of its vast army.  Germany, allied to Austria-Hungary by treaty, viewed the Russian mobilization as an act of war against Austria-Hungary, and declared war on Russia
France, bound by treaty to Russia, found itself at war against Germany.
Britain, allied to France, declared war against Germany. United States President Woodrow Wilson declared a U.S. policy of absolute neutrality, an official stance that would last until 1917 when Germany's policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. Japan, honoring a military agreement with Britain, declared war on Germany.  Then Austria-Hungary responded by declaring war on Japan.?
Italy, although allied to both Germany and Austria-Hungary, was able to avoid entering the fray by citing a clause enabling it to evade its obligations to both.  It eventually joined the Allied forces.

The reason world war 1 was started was because 1:Network of alliances; After the man from serbia, killed a man from austria-hungry, they was mad.  So, russia stepped in sayin"Mess wit them, yall dead" so germany said,"Oh yea, well you gotta go through me" so russia was on.  After that, the decieded 4 some reason, they wanted to get France.  While tryin to get france, they had to go through europe, so they got betguima. So, britain said, "oh heck no, 1st my friends, now my continent, lets go fools."So they going, and now ottoman- empire sayin okay, we'll help yall germany.  that was happining, everyone fighting, and alittle later, france wantedsome action.  2:Militarism;They wanted to also prove that they have the better army.  3:Nationalism;They had excessive pride in there nation.  4:Terroism;They were the ones who caused it sort of, but because Austria-hungry controlled them.  they was sik'n'tired.  You'd probably do the same thing.     Hey, if yall need more imfo, go to google or ask.  oh yeah, im only 12, and all yall need 2 know this, Smarter than all yall!

Just so everyone knows ur all half wrong!
It started from for things: military rivalry, land, alliances and murder.
I dont know much which is why im on here to find out more( not that it helped much n by da way its for my homework!) anyway the HEIR to the austro-hungry throne went into Serbia and was murdered by a member of the black hand. This was the spark for the war! I then gave an excuse for austro-hungry to attack Serbia.
Alliances
From this Germany backed up Austro-hungry while on the other side Britain, Russia and France backed up Serbia which resulted in lots of people and countries involved all over the world. hence the name World War 1.
n if u think its funny let me just tell u one more thing loads of people died for you to be alive today- dont laugh be gratedful.
One more thing im 13 so if i know all of that why cant u get ur act together and help others! Put on what u no at da bottom n please rate my answer!

world war one was started because Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire was killed by a serbian nationalist. the austro hungarian empire then set serbia a list of conditions as a punishment and serbia failed to cooperate with one of them which was to have an  Austro-Hungarian spy sit in in all there meetings. the Austro-Hungarian empire then declared war on serbia, russia felt this was unfair and backed up serbia, attacking the Austro-Hungarian empire. germany chimed in on the side of the the Austro-Hungarian empire. russia france and england all had a previous alliance that they would all help each other if one of them was in trouble. this then got england and france involved so in the end it was:
russia   vs   germany
england       the Austro-Hungarian empire
france
serbia (who ducked out when the big countries were fighting)

Hitler was only a baby when War of the Worlds I started, and Orson Wells read out something about the first chapter on the radio. This caused a panic in America when all the people thought they were really going to be invaded by martians (the word for Germans back in the 1900's). This made Churchill send an SMS to Hitler while he was still in his crib, and it dissed Hitler's nan (in Germany this is even worse than dissing your momma). So, in a nutshell, it was all down to the Enlish and the Americans for not wanting Germany to take over the whole world and make everyone eat cabbage and drink beer. Mind you, I think the Americans do that now don't they? so maybe Germany won after all !

Thanks

Matt

History books record that World War I started when the nations went to war to avenge the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the Habsburg throne, on June 28, 1914.

This is the typical explanation. But the "revisionist historian" knows just what caused and what the purpose was of the conflagration of World War I.

Up until America's entry into this war, the American people had followed the wise advice of President George Washington given in his farewell address, delivered to the nation on September 17, 1796.  President Washington said: "It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliance with any portion of the foreign world.... Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humour or caprice?'

President Washington attempted to warn the American people about getting embroiled in the affairs of Europe. But in 1914, it was not to be.  There were those who were secretly planning America's involvement in World War I whether the American people wanted it or not

The reason WWI started because Gavrilo Princip who was a Bosnian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia saying it was all their fault and that lead to Germany helping Austria-Hungary, which lead to Russia helping the Serbians and so on.

The main causes of WW1 were:
1. Militarism
2. Alliances
3. Imperialism
4. Nationalism

1 means the belief that a country should maintain and readily use strong armed forces.
2 means countries or people that unite and combine.
3 means a policy of ending a countries power, influence through colonization.
4 means a political independence and loyalty for a particular country/party.

These all led to the assassination. In my opinion, I believe it was Austria-Hungary who started the war because their confrontation annoyed the other countries! Anything else I should know about, please write back. I'm doing WW1 as a project and would like to know any more info. I'm 14. Thanks. x

So over a course of six weeks one murder lead to a world war.  But was it just short term events that lead to the war?
The archduke was shot, Austria declares war on Serbia , Russia joins in, Germany decides to fight, Britain tried to protect little countries. Which lead up to the war, started the war and became the war. Yet deep down there was way more to it.
Over a long period of time Countries had developed friendships with other countries ,such as Britain and Belgium, who promised to look after each over if they got into trouble. Countries , such as Britain, had created a large and successful empire that dominated the world. Where other countries like Germany wanted a chance to a fight fir an empire and show she was best. With land up for grabs after the war with Germany in 1871 resulted in a distrust between countries. Every one had an enemy and no one trusted each other. There was suspicion of plots to invade between Austria and Russia which meant they were both waiting for a opportunity to get in there first and invade the other before they were invaded themselves. That became a long search for war.

They seriously NEED to update this website more.......... My answer is stop acting like gay little kids.. You people are pathetic, use this website the RIGHT way, don't look for fit guys or anything like that. I personally don't care about world war one, and I don't know why we need to know about it, but I'll tell you immature 40 year olds that live with your parents what started it.
The archduke and the archduchess of Austria- Hungary were killed by Gavrilo Princip. He was a Bosnian Serb member of a secret organization named Young Bosnia(Млада Босна/Mlada Bosna).

well, WWI started for many reasons.

1) Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was unpopular and needed a success to gain popularity, so he wanted to increase Russia'spower in the Balkans in south-east Europe
2) in 1870 France had been defeated by Germany and Germany seized Alsace and Lorraine, so France wanted to get it back.
3) Serbs in the Austrian Empire wanted to be citizens of the independent country Serbia
4)Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
5) Britain agreed to protect Belgium in 1839 if anyone attacked them. So when Germany attacked Belgium on 2nd August Britain helped Belgium. This got Britain involved

Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August

bye!!!

Strong feelings of nationalism throughout Europe prior to The Great War created an atmosphere in Europe which made war a likelihood. The spark which ignited the flame and transformed these underlying problems into a frenzy of hostilities happened on June 28, 1914, when Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip, while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia.  Many historians consider this to be the spark that started WW1.

Austro-Hungary presented an ultimatum of thirty demands to Serbia  and 48 hours were allotted for their answering. Serbia agreed to all but one: Austrian investigation of the assassination plot.

As a result, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia (who had allied with Serbia). Two days later, Germany declared war on France and swept its armies through Belgium, violating its neutrality. Because of this, Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland) declared war on Germany. Austro-Hungary declared war on England. And thus started WWI.

The  first world war is the most important event of the 20th century. it cost the lives of 9 million ppl, had the first major genocide, was also the 1st war to see industrial warfare and the mobilisation of not armies in thousands but millions. the war started for a number of reasons.
1. Germany was created in 1870-71 in a war against france in which it took Alsase Lorraine . this wud eventually lead to the french participation in ww1.
2. Germany was lead by a masterful Diplomat Otto Von Bismark. He kept Germany in a defensive alliance with Russia and Austria. he kept the peace and france isolated for 20 years. then Kasier William 2 came to power and he was a terrable leader with little or no political skill. he ultimatly brought Germany into the war with Britain in his naval expansion and he then got rid of russia by not renewnin the Drikasierbund and this led to Russia becomin an ally of France.
3. The german nation was expanin economically and politcally. it was expanin in all heavy industries overtakin Britain. they extended there influence in africa and asia. this was  created conflict with other powers throughout the world and was another reason 4 ww1.
4. the BALKENS!!

the spark that lit europe alight was the assaination of Franz Ferdand but war was almost a certainty.

P.S. sorry bout the bad spellin, if u have any qs on ww1 i wud be happy to anwser them my email address in kingkongkill@htoamil.com

another thing germany did not want more land that is wrong the germanys if they had won wud not hav annaxed any more european territory. they might have got some colonies off Btitain, France etc. nationalism was a major part but it was not the whole reason. the triple alliance was not the 3 emperors it was between italy germany and austra and was not very strong as italy did not follow through. Britain was not part of any european alliance as it wsa in "splended isolantion". it only entered the war due to the invasion of Belgium and the possible threat of German domination in continental Europe.

There were many causes of World War I, and they are represented by the anagram MAIN.  This stands for Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism.  On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry was assassinated by members of the Black Hand.  This was a Slavic nationalist group who wanted to unite the Slavs and the Balkans.  This act set into motion the system of alliances, which turned a local conflict in World War I.  The system of alliances was just one of many causes of World War I.

World War 1 began after the Archduke of the decaying Austro-Hungarian empire was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 by a group of Serbian nationalists. This event began the struggle between Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian government.

It started with franz ferdinand being assasinated in sarajevo, but there were already all these tensions in europe at the time.
The alliance system made it a world war, because many of the allies had colonies in asia and africa, which spread the conflict.

Austria-Hungary's reaction to the death of their heir (who was in any case not greatly beloved by the Emperor, Franz Josef, or his government) was three weeks in coming.  Arguing that the Serbian government was implicated in the machinations of the Black Hand (whether she was or not remains unclear, but it appears unlikely), the Austro-Hungarians opted to take the opportunity to stamp its authority upon the Serbians, crushing the nationalist movement there and cementing Austria-Hungary's influence in the Balkans.

It did so by issuing an ultimatum to Serbia which, in the extent of its demand that the assassins be brought to justice effectively nullified Serbia's sovereignty.  Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary, was moved to comment that he had "never before seen one State address to another independent State a document of so formidable a character."

Austria-Hungary's expectation was that Serbia would reject the remarkably severe terms of the ultimatum, thereby giving her a pretext for launching a limited war against Serbia.

However, Serbia had long had Slavic ties with Russia, an altogether different proposition for Austria-Hungary.  Whilst not really expecting that Russia would be drawn into the dispute to any great extent other than through words of diplomatic protest, the Austro-Hungarian government sought assurances from her ally, Germany, that she would come to her aid should the unthinkable happen and Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary.

Germany readily agreed, even encouraged Austria-Hungary's warlike stance.  Quite why we'll come back to later.
