At the 40,000 foot level, UNIX architecture can be seen as an onion (kernel, shell, utilities).  

o   The shell:  connects and interprets users’ commands, calls programs from memory, and executes them.

shell is just like a ordinary program like 'who'& 'mail' that seats between user & operating system. it facilites of the kernel has real benifit. it also known as command iterpreter.
