The Challenger space shuttle exploded because there was a seal failure which caused a flame leak in one of the two solid rocket boosters (SRB) that ignited the main liquid fuel tank. Within a matter of seconds, the flame had burned enough to cause major structural failures in the external tank and the orbiter broke because of aerodynamic forces around it.
