A pure bred chihuahua female can run anywhere from $200 to over $500.  A show-quality dog would be at the high end while a pet-quality dog would be near the lower end.  If you aren't going to show the dog in the show ring, you don't need a show-quality dog.

The difference is that a show-quality dog exhibits the physical traits set down in strict breed standards describing how long the body should be, how the face should be shaped, etc.  A pet-quality dog will differ from those standards, it may weigh a little too much, have an overbite or ears too far down on the head, hold its tail not high enough, etc.  It has nothing to do with how loving a companion it will be.

Anyone who tries to tell you that they charge more for the smaller pups (teacups, etc.) because they are more rare should be politely thanked for their time and not purchased from.  The smallest of this smallest of toy breeds is more likely to have medical problems than those expected to be over 4 pounds when fully grown.  They're not more rare, more desirable, etc. unless you have your heart set on a teeny tiny dog.

I have one 2 1/2 pound and one 4 pound, both female.  The littler one has cost me close to $2000 for hernia operations, retained baby teeth, and more frequent teeth cleanings since her mouth is so small it's hard to get all the way back to brush them.  I knew this when I got her, I wouldn't ever take her back, but her more sturdy sister is just as loving without these added costs.

Once again... a chihuahua shouldn't be purchased for that low of an amount... do now trust people that have 15 or so puppies either... that is a sure sign of a puppymill and NEVER buy from a pet sho where you would pay $1200 and get a horrible puppy. sick, genetic faults, etc.

The smaller the puppy, i have noticed the higher the price....I honestly feel it shouldn't be that way, because the smaller the puppy / dog, the more health problems it may have. The prices vary...$200 to $2500. Some breeder's say that certain colors also make the prices higher, like a blue coat, some say this color is rare...this is not true....
