Putting it simply, yENC is a way of compressing posts on Usenet so that they require less lines.  It is quicker to u/l and/or quicker to d/l the same file w/ yENC than without.  yENC compresses up to 30%, so it is really preferable.  However, to d/l a file posted w/ yENC requires software to decompress the file.  Many Usenet clients, especially older versions, do not have yENC.  The latest version of Agent by Forte, the best Usenet software, is fully compatible w/ yENC.

What people don't realize is that the JPEG format is quite flexible, and there is room built in for more file compression with relatively little loss of quality. If you want to u/l and d/l faster, just compress the JGP file a bit more, don't post in a format that requires special software to decode!
