Hi Rose,

I just bought a baby Chihuahua from a pet store. Most pet stores will refuse to give away the breeders information.

In order to register a dog with the AKC or CKC, both parents have to be registered and the breeder would have had to register the litter.  You then list the registration numbers of both parents as well as the litter.  Since you bought the dog at a pet store, I don't think that information will be available.  You may be able to do a limited registration, best to check with those organizations for complete details.

Genetic testing can be done by a veterinarian trained and experienced in that, but I don't know what you're hoping to find.  Most genetic defects the animal already has are visible, such as slipped kneecaps, weak tracheas, etc.  If you were going to breed the dog, you might want to know if it was a possible carrier, but please don't breed a store bought dog, you have no way of knowing what you'll get.  There are so many dogs needing adoption, please don't add to the excess.

thanks guys, and yes i requested breeder info from the pet store and they wouldn't give me any, they just told me that she has 3 aunts and 1 dad. and yes i wanted to breed her, but after doing extensive research decided to wait till i could do it properly with a good, show quality female. it's something i'm looking forward to pursuing in the near future. by the way, when i got my chis i was given a contract saying my dogs had no defects, and if they did the pet store would pay for it. now i'm wondering exactly what that means and how they could possibly guarantee a backyard bred dog? i find this really odd and could use some clarification on this. thanks

It's probably a standard form, and you have only a limited amount of time to find the defect.  Odds are they seldom or ever have to actually pay out on it.

I think of those sort of like the warranty I got when I bought my house.  The pipes in the bathroom leaked, but that was covered in the warranty.  Turns out the warranty would pay for the replacing of the pipe, but not for the cost of breaking into and then repairing the wall in order to get to the pipe to replace it.

Try the Continental Kennel Club and the ACA
