this is an example of how stupid you all are.  there are FIFTY states and ONE district.  so the person who wrote above, "i think they are wrong there is only 50 states . . .," needs to pay attention.  (there ARE fifty states, not there IS fifty states)

50 States, 3 terriroties, and 3 commonwealths. American Samoa, Guam and the Virgin Islands are all territories of the United States. Washington, D.C., and the Northern Mariana Islands are commonwealths. Puerto Rico was once a territory, but is now a commonwealth, according to Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids, published by the U.S. Government Printing Office.

There are 46 states and 4 commonwealths.

Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are commonwealths not states.

Actually, all of you are wrong.  The answer is:  "There are 50 states."  The only one of you who came close was "dixierebel!"  Congratulations!  If you had only dropped out "because the 1 district is not considered a state" you would have been correct!  Better luck next time.

there is technically 50 states. but Puerto Rico is also technically considered a state of the US. Puerto Ricans even have US citizenship. So Technically there is 51 states.

There are only 42 states. If you think about it they are all classified as states, but 7 that are not recognized by the government therefore they do not have a state university. All the government recognized states have a university such as the university of alabama or the university of california. Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, they all do not have a university. I will try to get you more into on this.

You are all wrong there are 51 states...You forgot Puerto Rico!!! Duh!

OK. You all agreed that DC is a district.  Well, officially Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, and Massachusetts are all commonwealths.  Further more, if these commonwealths, which are political units having local autonomy but voluntarily united with the U.S., are included as part of the United States, then are Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands considered 51 & 52?

Incorrect, there are at least two Republics and 4 Commonwealths in the United States, that would leave 44 'States' plus the District of Columbia if you choose to include that as well.

Everyone one is correct !!!! and dixierebel is a dumb ass.... They stated " There are 50 states and 1 district.  No one is saying that the district is a state.!!!!!!!

THERE ARE 50 STARS ON THE USA FLAG AND OVERALL THAT MEANS THAT THERE IS 50 STATES BUT THERE ARE 2 MORE STATES WHICH FOR THEY COULD NOT PUT 2 EXTRA STARS ON THE FLAG AS IT WOULD LOOK ODD
