In the bible it speakes on how god sent David into war, and David conquered his enemies. So he had to kill them. He also killed goliath in the name of the lord. So I don't think it's a sin to kill in war. If war is necessary. Also self-defence is war so I don't think it's a sin, if your life or anothers is threatened. On the matter of death penalty in the old testimant in the book of dueteronomy god ordered the death of people that commited certain sins. But in the new testament jesus gave grace for all sins. With his life, so I don't really know what to think on that matter.

I beleive the answer is motive. If in self-defence or war, you must look at the person's intention. A soldier for example could be an upstanding man who would never think of harming another, but if a army invaded is country, and he takes up arms without malice or anger, praying that cooler heads will prevail, slays his enemies he is without sin. However if he feels good about ending life or inflicts excessive force on the enemy, he has sinned. So motive of heart, I believe determines sin, afterall the Lord knows what we feel on the inside.

Your soul is trapped in your body while your body is alive. You do not need scripture to justify protecting the life of the body to allow the soul to remain in it. Thus the issue is: By protecting the body does one damn the soul that resides within it? There is enough scripture availaible to answer that question. Evil exists and you must defend against it, even in a real life or death situation. Would you not pull your child out of the path of a speeding car simply based on scripture or the lack there of? In the teachings of the scripture you are asked and expected to love. This should be your intention but you must be practical to realize, in as much as you have the capacity to love, others have the capacity to hate. Even to the point of death.
Jesus went into the desert and fasted for 40 days. At his weakest point the Devil asked him to jump off a cliff. This was to end his mortality not to prove his divinity. Jesus was constrained by his mortality and wisely chose not to jump. He still had to remain in the flesh to acomplish his mission. You are a mortal. You must protect that. You are here for a reason and you must remain here as long as you can to make an impact that will remain long after your are gone. That is what Jesus did.

The accounts of wars and killing in self defense were righteous wars directed by Jehovah. They are in the old Testament, when followers of God were still under the Mosaic Law.  But the Scriptures say that Jesus was the end of the Law. He said that the world would know his followers by the had amongst themselves. So a true Christian would not take up arms in a war. Also, the Bible promises that those asleep in death will be resurrected onto an earthly paradise (John 5:28). It would be foolish to disobey God's law and kill in defense of this life, because you may lose your prospect of eternal life.

Good answer cafr also to Emi the reason God said David's hand were filled with blood was because of what happened with Uriah the husband of Bathsheba. It had nothing to do with his actions in war.

You cannot call yourself a Christian if you say killing in self defense is ok to do. NO killing is good. ALL killing is sin. No matter what the cause is, taking another mans life, murder, is against Almighty God's Will.
