Ears - My purebred Yorkie has large ears that flop down.  Why is this? Is it a defect or some problem with it's breeding history?

You might try cutting the hair off around the edges of the ears.  Sometimes the hair on the ears gets too thick and the ears are not strong enough to hold up the hair.

I also forgot to say that if that does not help them to stand up the ears might need to be taped in place.  I'm not sure if you must make their ears stand before a certain time or not.  The ears may have grown that way i'mnot sure about that.

If you bought the Yorkie when it was older the owners should have trained their ears to stick up.  When they are pups there is a way to make them stick up permanently.  It's not a defect at all.  I have a 11 week old pup and I prefer the ears to flop down instead of them up.

No it is not a defect at all. It is common for some dogs ears to not stand upright at first. You can either tape the dogs ears to stand up ,or you can do a massaging technique that will stimulate the ears tissue to stand on its own. Its like physical therapy for the ears. you take the ears and fold them back and forth and back and forth over and over again. There are a couple different ways that you can massage a dogs ears to help them stand up. Just ask your local vet and he or she should be able to tell you.
