Not necessarily. However, it is unlikely that you will always know the exact type of the exception. The usual way of using exception handling is to use a heirarchy of exception classes, and use a reference to the base class in the 'catch', section to trap errors from all those objects. You can use polymorphic behaviour in these objects to retrieve the actual error, context etc. Also, if the exception object contains any references to allocated memory, system resources etc, it is possible to release them only when the exception is captured as a reference.
