hi my name is amanda and i have a female shih tzu that is a little over a year old and the last time she went into heat we bred he with a male and we left her for a bout 3 noghts and went back to get her and then i read on the internet that she had just gotten into the right phase to breed and we took her back for 2 more nights when we wnt and picked her up she was all wet and so was the male so we just assumed that it had happened well now i am not sure that she is pregnant her nipples seem to be getting larger but i do not sit around everyday to really see so i am not sure if she is then she should only be a week away can you tell me how to be sure that she is and what i should look for to determine that she is or is not

Well you can tell if your dog is pregnant be squeezing her nipples and seeing if there is milk. Or you could take her to the vet and get an x-ray.

Puppies open there eyes when they are 8 days old.

HI, I have a 15month old Shih tzu whom I had planned on breeding around her fourth heat. She should be about two years old by then. The problem is, she is pretty small for the breed, she is only 7lbs,8oz. Is she too small to breed?  I only wanted to breed her once, but if her risk of complication is to high I won't. Would her petite size pose a health threat?

Stinky,
I have 6 dogs. and two of them are pedigreed Shih Tzus. We rescue animals. Dogs, cats, and lots of reptiles.
Yes, most dogs should be spayed or neutered. However, mid-sized, mixed breeds are not for everyone and if seperate breeds are to be maintained SOMEONE has to breed them. Who do you propose do that, the Government?
If you're gonna make a comment, make intelligent comments.

well puppies open their eyes around 10-12 days old and believe me you know when they are pregnant. the gestation is around 60-65 days. i have been through 8 litters of pups with my pitbulls and have never had a full breed litter and have never sold my pups i always give them to good homes with no fear of an owner fighting the dog. i also know where most pups have ended up and see them often.

Amanda you should not breed before 2 years of age and you should be right there as they are mating. You should not just "throw male and female" together and to breed when you did is not a good thing at all. Leave the breeding to people that know what they are doing and it is obvious you don't have a clue

if you take her to the vet they will tell u there and then if she is and they will charge you around £20 to see her and by the way it isnt creul to breed your dog as it is allways best to let them have a least one litter

In my opinion, the female should be at least 18 months old before breeding. You can be kind enough to wait if you truly love your dog.

While breeding a dog, lets say the male never quite gets inside the female but comes into direct contact with her genitals and holds there for, say 5-7, seconds. Is it still possible for the female to become pregnant?
