Firewalls are usually pretty easy to deal with if you use a program like Mcaffe or the like on your personal PC. Simply find the program, open it up and browse the settings. It'll most likely have a security settings area where you can activate, deactivate, or alter the properties of the firewall. Just turn it off. On a network however, that depends on the security level of the firewall. If you work for a very large/important/paranoid firm, the firewall may go so far as to work on itself. In other words, you probably can't get to it on your network node. If by some miraculous fluke of ethernet negligence the IT department felt it ok to trust internal employees, try going to My Computer, find the My Network Places location and locate the central server. You may be able to locate the server's desktop. From there just go into it's My computer/Program files and scrounge around for a bit. It would help to know the name of the particular program(s) used to constitute the firewall. If by some fellonious chance you're disabling a firewall completely unrelated to anything you're sitting in front of (I.E. you're bloody hacking Quest from your house or a laptop hitched to a payphone) then with all due respect, I'd try chatting with one of the following "professionals": A no BS hacker. A computer geek who knows more than usual. An employee of target company with a grudge against his/her boss. An employee working in the IT department at said target company. Other sources of help abound, but it's not so likely that anyone would post essentially "how to jack your network" on such a public forum. Good luck... I think.

Why on earth would you want to get rid of a firewall? It's one of the most crucial tools to have on your computer is you are at all active online!

She probably would like to get rid of it because it may not let you use some programs that you may need to access the internet to use. Although there are different ways to temporarily disable a firewall, i am not too sure on how because you probably have a different brand firewall than I know how to disable. Sorry.

I agree with Hush it is very important tool and will keep you away from viruses. if it is blocking you from programs go to control panel and go to security and then go to firewall. then hit the add program tab at the bottom of the window. I advise you not to turn it off but all you have to do is when you open the firewall window you just select the off icon.

Char, I only know off-hand how to do it in WindowsXP. I see the question is old, so you probably won't ever come by to see this, but if you post info on your operating system, I'll try helping. Hush, to answer your question that you for some reason posted as an answer despite the fact that it in absolutely no way answers Chars question, some downloads that a person actually wants to receive may be blocked by a firewall. And, there are probably other reasons that people besides myself have encountered. Char determined there is a need to disable the firewall; the reasons for such in no way influence the answer sought.

If you are talking about windows XP, do this. Click on start menu, choose control pannel and then go to Security and then Windows firewall. There you can turn on or off the windows firewall. If you have firewall protection with your Virus protection software, ONLY then you should change windows fire wall. Thats my suggestion. Arun.
