When i first adopted my malamute, he ate everything on site.  Once he learned that he is home and doesn't need to worry about food, then he settled down.  Now it seems like we re force feeding him, because he looks like he is loosing some weight.  But, he eats when he wants to.

When they get bored they will try to scape, mine did for 2 days in a row.  So, we got him new chew toys and big bone, hide treats for him to find, they just need to be busy all day long.

Generally they don't like cats some malamutes does get along with them, but keep in the back of your mind that they can be food as well as friends.

Question- I have a two year old female spayed Alaskan Malamute, as well as a older family cat. I am thinking about letting her sleep outside her crate at night and have some independence in the house. She enjoys her teeth. This last Halloween she enjoyed eating a Pumpkin off the plate, that we had
for Halloween decoration.
I am hesitant for quality things, what do you think -- should I let her sleep outside her crate at night in my house?
Thank you,
steph

yes, mine eats cats and every other small animal.no i shouldn't say she eats them .but she chases and kills small animals and i have no doubt on my mind she would even kill someones cat if she gets ahold of one.sad but its a fact. i'veheard plenty of times that malamutes might see small animals as prey by instinct.she has not eaten anything she's killed.and fortunately she has not killed anybodies pet.she is also not aggressive or vicious at all. i think that is completely different. she's never even showed any side of aggressiveness. just be a responsible dog owner and don't let your Mal get the chance to get away and chase someones miniature dog that they can mistake for a squirrel. just never forget they're as close to the wolf as a dog breed can possibly get.and wolfs have to kill for food in the wild but aren't necessarily aggressive. i doubt my malamute sees my neighbors cat as food necessarily, but the instinct is definitely there.
regardless, malamutes are often stubborn(mine is) but they're the sweetest, most loving, extremely smart, and just absolutely amazing dogs . great and gentle with children and people in general.
as to the other questions, make sure your Malamute can't get to your garbage:)
i never had a problem of my malamute or Siberian husky running away. i go hiking , climbing, camping regularly and never had an issue having them off the leash in the woods and that's where they're the happiest for sure. she doesn't trie to escape at home either. all she tried to do a couple of times is to get to my neighbors trash:)

A Mal will eat just about anything you give them, at about anytime, You must remember that they are not to receive people food. There are three dog food manufacturers that I would recommend for your Mal. All are Hi protien (minimum 23%) either lamb or chicken and no corn or by-products. This eliminates almost all other dog foods..including the Premium Brands.
Listed by preference Fromm Family of dog foods

Redpaw dog food....

Or Diamond Lamb and Rice Formula

As far as them running away....they will...typical with any of the arctic breeds. Training can correct them of that need to wheel it out of your yard. Mine can be left unattended without an fence and not leave the yard even though the yard is 2 acres. They come immediately. Working with them daily is key. As far as eating cats....I have never in my 30+ years with Mals seen one eat a cat. Mals do have a high natural prey instinct, and smaller animals of any kind if not raised with the Mal are looking for trouble sticking their nose in the Mals domain. Ankle biter dogs other folks let run around off leash and hassle your Mal though his fence can be a real problem. This is where you really want that 6 foot fence! I have personally had Mals chase down grown rabbits, pin them to the ground, look at them, let them go, and chase them all over again. Eat other small animals, not under 99.9% of normals circumstances. But their size can absolutely do damage via play with smaller cats dogs not socialized within the same household.

\0\05{they have a very slow metabolism. This makes them need a lot less food than most large breed dogs. to much food can cause obesity or even bloat, a deadly illness caused by overeating.  it all depends on the size and activity level, talk with your vet

well we got our malamut at a young age. She gets along with our two cats. She has only ran away when we leave and have our neighbors watch her. She gets along with our other two dogs. Malamuts usually love to tear up stuff. But we broke ours mostly and so could you. they are a fun loving dog. They love going on walks.
