How does one troubleshoot a GFCI that is connected to a switch that control's a garbage disposal? When I connect the GFCI per instructions, the rest of the kitchen sockets stop working.

You do not need to havea a gfi for the disposer, just use a regular recep. for this

your grounf fault breaker, should only be connected at the beging of your circuit or the end, also, if there is any slight defect in your appliance, it will trip the ground fault breaker
