How deep does the needle of a tattoo machine penatrate the skin? Also how far is the needle suppost to come out the end of the tube that it travels through?

It's about 1mm, going past the epidermis into the dermis. If any less than a millimeter, it might leave scratches and wear off, if any deeper it would be extremely painful, and there would be a lot of bleeding.

It has to go thru the top layers of skin into the dermis, which is about an eighth of an inch under the surface, any less, and it may wear away over time, fade very badly, or become scratched... if you go deeper, it can cause unnecessary pain, bleeding of an amount that should not occur, and can also make the tattoo scar more than it should, resulting in a tattoo of very poor quality!
