This is a hotly debated topic. Some feel that the pit bull is the same thing as the old English bull baiting dog. However, the consensus view (I believe) is that the pit bull is a cross of the old English bull baiting dog and the old "bull and terrier" (a cross of the bull dog and a now extinct hunting terrier)

i read that it was a stafford and a bull mastif but this might be wrong

CH is stupid. The dogs that were bred to make the pitbull, was a staffordshire bull terrier, bulldog and other fighting dogs.

Originally bred from a variety of bulldogs and terriers, American breeders increased their weight and gave them a more powerful head. A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

My answer is the pit bull is a mix of a bulldog and a American staffordshire...and it's true!
