what kind of automation ur expecting. is that theft prevention system or electrical appliance automation or some thing else

I am very glad to answer to your question, even we are doing such project that has parameters like home temperature, position of light(ON or OFF), humidity, RF link e.t.c., has to be intimated to the house master through sms. we are using LDR, Temperature sensors, and FM transmitters and most importantly controlling stepper motor to move from one place to another in home. we can found the code for temperature and controlling stepper motor in www.commlinx.com.au/schemetics.html hope u will use this link and get benefited.

you can automates your home using micro-controller. u have to program different events with rtc(real time clock) connect 8255 on the output side and keypad with LCD. so make arrangement of relays on the output side,so that according to time and different conditions u can switch on or of the device and also can dim the light by phase control of that.
