The industry got caught up in the myth that cell phones can ignite gasoline vapors.  However, with an ignition temperature of 853 degrees Fahrenheit, a cell phone just cannot generate enough energy to ignite the vapors.  What causes most of the fires during fueling (besides idiots smoking while pumping gas) is static electricity discharge.  Moving gasoline will create its own static electricity which must be grounded to prevent ignition.  People can get static electricity buildup simply by sliding across their car seat.  A couple simple rules:  touch your car before the gas nozzle; don't get back into your car while fueling; if filling a container, place it on the ground.
