Stress and Performance are more or less same.
Stress means putting some execessive load and testing is done whether it can withstand in that situation. Performance is that whether it can perform well in that situation.

Stress testing  is to know the capacity of the server. Performence testing is to know the performence of the server under bench mark.

PerormanceTesting is nothing but to test the application for graceful behavior esp User acceptable response and to test whether the system support expected load with available resources.

With Stress Testing we would be trying to break the system by overwhelming its resources or by taking resources away from it.To test whether the system recoverable from stress.
