Should "so" be used as a conjunction joining two independent clauses?

Would a subordinate construction, using "since" or "because" be a better choice?

"So" has a history as a coordinating conjunction, but it is frowned upon in this capacity in formal writing.  "Since" sounds almost familiar, but it is still better than the "so" construction.  "Because" is the safest bet.
