Protection keeps any red spell from even being announced as a target of a pro-red creature. Almost always, a card does exactly as it says. If a counterspell type card resolves against rage, the effect will just fail to do anything, and the rage will stay on the stack until it resolves. This doesn't counter the effect of the counterspell, so other side effects of the counterspell, such as life gain or loss from Absorb or Undermine, will still happen. (Normally if a spell has NO legal targets when it resolves, any untargeted side effects will fail to happen.. So if another spell countered the spell Absorb was trying to counter, you would NOT gain the life)
