Hitler didn't one day just decide to take over Europe. His prominent aim was to defy the Treaty of Versailles implemented on Germany and also signed by Britain and France. The treaty outlined that he should disarm, never be joined with Austria and French troops were to monitor the Rhine land. Hitler invaded the Rhine land in the late 1930's without France or Britain objecting because they believed the Treaty of Versailles was too harsh and were using the policy of 'Appeasement' hoping to avoid another war. Hitler became more confident and tried to gain Austria saying he wanted to join German speaking countries together. (Anschluss) so...yeah Hitler just became to arrogant and thought he could keep going

Basically, WW2 started when Adolf (sp?) Hitler decided that he wanted to make Germany bigger. There were a lot of other reasons, but this was the one that lit the flame. Once Hitler took over a few countries, a few bigger countries were a bit PO'dand decided to kind of join together and stop this crazy madman who was bent on taking over the world and breeding super-humans who, quite frankly, killed who they did not fit their standards: Pretty, strong, blond hair-blue eyes, and followed the same religion. If you didn't follow one of these...You die. Hitler and his band of followers, called the Nazi (sp?), attacked and killed a lot of the poor Jews living in Germany and started the wonderfully bloody and Gorey World War Two.

in response to yay4thelittleppl's answer, i agree with everything except your statement that France appeased Germany between 1933 and 39, indeed on many occasions they called for war against Germany to implement the terms of the treaty of versailles, but were hesitant to act without British support, and the british did want to appease Germany. Both because Chamberlain felt the Treaty of Versailles was too harsh and also because the British were afraid of war knowing how costly it would be. The French were altogether too keen to invade Germany straight away, but i feel this would have only lead to a swift response by Germany that the French would have failed to deal with as they did in 1939, but they certainly had good reasons :) Mike D, University of Kent - Canterbury, England

WWII resulted from the rise of totalitarian, militaristic regimes in Germany, Italy, and Japan, a phenomenon stemming in part from the Great Depression that swept over the world in the early 1930s and from the conditions created by the peace settlements (1919-20) following World War I . WWII began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany, without a declaration of war, invaded Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany on Sept. 3, and all the members of the Commonwealth of Nations, except Ireland, rapidly followed suit. The fighting in Poland was brief. The German blitzkrieg, or lightning war, with its use of new techniques of mechanized and air warfare, crushed the Polish defenses, and the conquest was almost complete when Soviet forces entered (Sept. 17) E Poland. While this campaign ended with the partition of Poland and while the USSR defeated Finland in the Finnish-Russian War (1939-40), the British and the French spent an inactive winter behind the Maginot Line , content with blockading Germany by sea.

Underlying Causes of World War II Nationalism: Perhaps the greatest underlying factor causing the war, nationalism was the primary reason for German, Italian and Japanese aggression. Fascism in these countries was built largely upon nationalism and the search for a cohesive "nation state." Hitler and his Nazi party used nationalism to great effect in Germany, already a nation where fervent nationalism was prevalent. In Italy, the idea of restoring the Roman Empire was attractive to many Italians. In Japan, nationalism, in the sense of duty and honor, especially to the emperor, had been widespread for centuries. Militarism: A highly militaristic and aggressive attitude prevailed among the leaders of Germany, Japan and Soviet Union. Compounding this fact was the traditional militant attitude of the first two (see below). Territorial Issues: All the nations that started World War II were left wanting for territory in some way by World War I. Germany lost territory after the war. Notably the Polish Corridor (see below), the Memel Territory (to Lithuania), the Province of Posen and the most economically valuable eastern portion of Upper Silesia. The economically valuable regions of the Saarland and the Rhineland were placed under the authority (but not jurisdiction) of France. Italy, which was part of the Allies in World War I, had been promised large chunks of Austrian territory. Italy received large portions of Austrian territory, such as the South Tyrol, however promises made regarding Albania and Asia Minor were ignored by the more powerful nations. Hungary, an ally of Germany had also been stripped of enormous territories after the partition of Austria-Hungary and hoped to regain those lands by allying with Germany. Japan had also, in 1915, joined the Allies and taken a German colony in China and a few islands which it had occupied, as well as swaths of Siberia and the Russian port of Vladivostok. Japan was forced to give up all but the few islands it had gained in the war. All of these nations were left stinging by the loss (or little gain) they received from the war. This attitude led many members of these nations to support those individuals and political parties who wished to gain territory for these nations.

World War II started when the Axis Powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan, wanted to expand. They tried to conquer all of the land, and soon, started a war. President Roosevelt did not want to be in the war because he favored isolationism, but when Roosevelt cut of the oil supply to Japan, Japan reacted by bombing Pearl Harbor. The next day, the president asked Congress for permission to declare war on Japan. Another reason is because German troops disguised themselves as Polish soldiers and then bombed a German radio station near the Polish border. They then framed Poland for the bombing and traveled across the border to begin an attack on Poland. The US was on Poland's side. I hope this helped!

To start with, Hitler wasn't a "crackpot old fool," nor did her sleep with girls. He was a genius. He was extremely smart, unfortunately, he used his brains for what he thought would be "world domination." There isn't a thing wrong with being smart...Hitler just had the wrong ideas about how to use his brains. Secondly, the war started when HITLER and the NAZIS invaded Poland, so Great Britain and France declared war against Germany on September the 1st, 1939 because they had been allies with those countries and had promised to stick by them in times of need. Hitler used Communists and Jews as punching bags, and told the German people that they were the cause of all of Germany's problems.

I completed this task as my final year at school major study, and I am appalled at some of the answers I have read. There is no one cause, although it could be argued WWI caused WW2. However, if you are looking for a simple explanation, here are the most acceptable reasons. Hitler had the desire to expand his empire throughout Europe, and the German people voted for him as it was during the Great Depression and Hitler promised hope. Appeasement of Chamberlain and the Allies. Germany took back Rhine Land, invaded Czechoslovakia etc. and the Allies effectively did nothing. Hitler didn't expect the Allies to declare war when he invaded Poland. Aggression from the Axis. Japan invaded Manchu and Italy invaded Ethiopia. World War 2 began with a combination of these factors. WW2 was NOT started because Hitler was killing Jews, this was the reason the USA got involved in the war well after it began in 1939. -Daniel

hitler wanted to take over the world and other countrys got invalved and germany teamed up with japan italy and took over france and then the french got invalved then the japanes desided not to trade with america anymore soo the americans stopped giving the japaneese special needs so the japanese bombed pearls harbor and then the americans whent to deside ok its time to go out to germiny and fight and then everything stated to go wrong for the nozis or axis so hitler then on shot his head the reoson hitler shot then burned jews is because he wanted germany to be war machines so he shot and burned all the sick weak or any of the disabled people so germany can be a strong country. and he faught for people with blue eyes and blond hair but he had black hair why?

ww2 started for a few reasons .The prosecution of jews and the halocaust.Germany had broken the treaty of versailes by having an army more than 100,000.And Germany invaded poland.
