A spell is anything that is not an ability or a land. Creatures, artifacts, enchantments, instants, sorceress are all spells. More specificaly they are spell CARDS, but are still spells. In some cases, like with Isochron Scepter, you can have a spell on the stack without a card.

Lands dont count as spells, since they dont use the stack when you play them. Things like veldakane arkmage specificaly reference artifact spells, so something like a seat of the synod will NOT trigger it since it doesnt count as a spell.
