how do you know if your 7-week old chi has an ear infection?  I daughter bathed her and now she has really puffy eyes, shakes her head alot (not while playing) and has really pink paws.  Im afraid she got water in her ears.

Odds are, your daughter got water and/or soap in the dogs ears and eyes.  When bathing practically any dog, wash the body and neck and rinse normally.  Put a little bit of lather on a washcloth and gently clean the face (pretend it's a human baby).  Then rinse the cloth out and wipe again.  Don't pour water over their heads.  Chihuahuas especially are very fastidious and will clean their faces just as a cat does, by licking a paw and running it over their face and head.

In future, put some cotton in the dogs ears to keep the water out and follow the directions above.  Unless they've rolled in something stinky, chihuahuas don't need to be bathed more than once every month or two.  The only thing that smells on a healthy chihuahua is their feet, since that is the only place they have sweat glands.  It's easy to wash them with a soapy rag and rinse well.  They should also have their teeth brushed at least once a week.  I use a baby toothbrush and paste (non-foaming and ok to swallow), don't use your grownup toothpaste.  If you start young, they grow to accept it, and be sure to give them a treat after and praise them during and after for not squirming, that way they associate toothbrushing with treats and happy humans.

Now, as to what to do.  Take precious puppy to the vet!  NOW!  Take along whatever was used to bathe the dog.  It sounds like she might be having a reaction to the soap/shampoo, especially if she is licking her paw pads or scratching them by pawing at the carpet.  FYI, an ear infection will usually give the ears a 'funky' smell.
