You can register your puppy with the CKC by downloading a form from their website and having two witnesses sign the witness section agreeing that the puppy is purebred.  The puppy must be at least 6 months old to do this.

Have the papers re-issued by the breeder if they are willing to do so.

You might consider writing the registering agency (American Kennel Club?) and requesting them.   Ask the owner:

with whom the dog was registered?
approximately when?
who was the mother and father?

However, I caution you to be aware that sometimes these supposedly AKC registered animals are not really registered at all, and the owner could have only claimed as such just to get extra money for the animal.  This might not be the case, however, considering you were given the animal.   On a personal note, I should add that I also do not put much stock in AKC registry, but that is a personal preference and a topic for another time.  If the owner cannot answer those questions, then you might have to consider that the puppy had no papers at all.

Your best bet is to find out what papers the owner lost (was it the AKC?  A breed-specific organization?  A kennel-specific one that lists blood lines?) and go to that agency and request new ones.  Most of the addresses for these agencies can be found online.   Good luck.

I'm pretty sure you ask the register under which it has been registered by the breeder, just as long as it has been registered in the first place that is but you make it sound like it has so it's all good ;).

The previous owner (person whose name the dog is registered to currently) must contact AKC or whatever organization it is registered with and request duplicate papers so they can be signed over to you.  Then you would have to re-register the dog in your name.

You won't be able to get one, you should have put more time into finding a responsible breeder. You might be able to get AKC ILP forms, go to www.akc.org. What kind of dog is it?

The American Kennel Club may help you retrive your papers. AKC, P.O. Box 37902 Raleigh, NC 27627-7902. Hope this helps. The certified pedigree record may also be on file and you can get information, quite like finding your own roots.
