Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Canidae Canis domesticus

http://darwin.nmsu.edu/~molbio/dog/Dogie4b.html

This classification is the same for all dogs, because any two dogs are able to have fertile offspring (the definition of a species), no matter what their breeds are.

Although the taxonomy there was accurate the definition of a species is not. Almost any canine can cross breed, although they are not all one species. For example if you really wanted to you could cross a gray wolf with a great dane, this has been proven in that wild wolves and coyotes have begun breeding in some areas of north america resulting in a group of unclassified (as far as I am aware) canines that are the size of a small wolf with the physical and mental atributes of a coyote.
The only Canines that are not theoretically breedable are true foxes which have a different numbern of chromosones to the rest ... this is however disputable.

Someone above said that the two things are members of the same species just in case they are able to mate and (normally) have fertile offspring.

To be clear, that is evidence of being the same species.  But it isn't necessary.  Most bacteria don't have anything akin to sexual reproduction.  They reproduce asexually.  But there are a huge number of bacteria species--more than animals, for instance.

I came across this by accident while searching Google for something.  Though it is several months past I thought I would share this with you:

Common Name: Alaskan Malamute

Category:  Mammals » Dogs

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus: Canis
Species: familiaris

That is as specific as a dog really gets.  Below that you don't find a lot of distinction because so many breeds can inter breed with so many others.  Hope that helps!

The "kind" of dog questioned by ramrod is actually better phrased as "breed." And yes any breed of dog can mate with any other breed. This is the result of the their chromosomes being of the same number and structure. Very rarely can any species successfully mate without the exact same chromosome number and structure. Horses (64 chromosomes) and donkeys (62 chromosomes) can mate to produce a jack or jinny (aka mule) with 63 chromosomes. The mule is sterile because of an odd number of chromosomes. I hope this helps.

A new, aquatic, single-celled organism has been discovered.   It is photosynthetic and it is able to absorb nutrients through its cell membrane.   It can reproduce asexually and it can exchange genetic information with others of its species.   To which kingdom of living things would you assign this organism?   Defend your choice of this kingdom and explain why it would not belong in the other five groups.

Scientists used to think that the wide variety of domesticated dogs--more than 400 recognized breeds--were variously descended from wolves, jackals, and coyotes. But most experts now believe that virtually all of them, from the smallest chihuahua to the most massive mastiff, are the progeny of Eurasian grey wolves. In fact, mitochondrial DNA evidence suggests that our furry friends are all descended from just a few female wolves that lived between 40,000 and 15,000 years ago. - Taken from Knowledge News.
