according to the FAQ on meditation, one first concentrates on a single object (candle, flower, breathing, blank wall) and slowly, as the brain slows down, one can stop concentrating on this object, and be without thought.

All forms of meditation lead to the same positive results. When practicing breath meditation focus on breathing into the abdominal area. Be aware of the rise and fall of your stomach. When your mind starts to wander immediately come back to the awareness of the rise and fall of your breath

You must concentrate on a very vast thing like the water in the ocean.Your mind will stray into many things, allow it to roam and gently bring it back when you realise it. This practice over a period of time will enhance your focus, ultimately helping in acheiving what you need.
