The highest rank on the Confederate side was full general, followed by lieutenant general (which was the highest rank on the Union side), followed by major general, brigadier general, full colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain, first lieutenant, and second lieutenant, which completes the ranks of commissioned officers. After them are the non-commissioned officers, which are various grades of sargeants. Below them are the enlisted men, who are various grades of corporals and privates.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I can speak to the different kinds of sargeants, corporals, and privates.
