I have a shepherd/husky mix. Female, spayed, approx 7 yrs old.  She has just starting to hide her dog treats in my potted plants. If she can't find a plant, she walks around the house crying (while holding the dog biscuit)

She also chews her nails, it has turned into a constant habit.  I've tried chew sticks, chew toys, nothing works.  She goes right back to biting her nails.  I have clipped them down as far as I can.  What to do?

what you need to do is keep your dog busy. try playing with it more often or take all the plants out of you house and give the dog a big flavored chew bone

You'll have to put mesh around the potted plants to keep her from burying her treats. As for the feet, try a bitter apple spray on the toes. If they still bother her, it is probably an allergy to something in her food or her environment. I have had dogs that chewed feet because of anxiety and because of allergies.

Not sure about the potted plant thing, but I work with a shepherd husky mix named Dexter.  Dexter is the funniest dog I've ever met.  He also bites his nails and keeps them trim on his own.  The local groomer couldn't believe it as most dogs don't do this type of grooming on their own.  Dexter used to spend most of his days playing on rough cement which kept his nails short.  1 year ago we moved our shop. Now he spends most of his time on painted floors or carpeting which has made his nails grow and he started biting his nails again.  Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.  If anything it'll save you on the grooming bill.  Dexters owner (My Co-worker) swears that Dexter used to stare at him as he bit his own nails, and began to mimic him.  From your statement it might be a breed thing.  Hope that helps a little.

Have you tried kongs? They are rubber toys that you put treats into it really keeps them occupied. Thats what my vet recommended for my dobbi he was licking his paws, until he got sores. Know whenever he starts I whip out the kong. Its sold in Petco or Petsmart. There are many different sizes, there are even flavored sprays you can put in them. Good luck
