I am about to purchase a home and have been told I will have to upgrade from the existing 60 amp service to 100 amp service,in order to obtain insurance, it is a side by side duplex and both sides need to be retrofitted approx. how much money am I looking at?

$1200 to $1500 if everything goes as plans.

Depends on if the new service is underground from the pole to your unit. or above ground. from the weather head into the your panel, it can run between 1,000 to 1500. around chicago area. depends on your plan for the back yard, incase your thinking about a pool, decking, certain height must be standard, by checking the electrical  code in your neighborhood.

You will not be able to do this wotk since you live in a duplex. You must have an electrical contractor do the work. The reason is liability since a mistake by you could cause life loss to your neighbours
