Do I absolutely HAVE to listen to only hardcore to be straight edge? Like, what does hard core include... I'm confused. Can it be punk or screamo? If not, what are hardcore bands I should give a listen to...

Not necessarily. I just think it's important to know the roots of what you're listening to: i.e. previously stated bands such as Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, etc. However, it isn't crucial to have said bands on your playlist 24/7 in order to follow the straight edge philosophy. Truthfully, because the newer sub-cultures that have branched out of the original hardcore [punk] anyway, you are not necessarily limiting yourself to only one type of music per say, because it really just follows back up to the "founding father". In my opinion, just know your roots, and you're fine.

It would be absurd to listen to hardcore and only hardcore. And several "screamo" kids follow after the ethics of hardcore/punk rock (and for some, straight edge, as well) anyway. They're just giving themselves a more defined label, I guess.

i really like what "anonymous" wrote... It's super important to me to know where it came from but at the same time don't limit yourself to just one type of music...sxe is a way of life...look at it that way.

I don't think you HAVE to listen only hardcore...I don't listen to it at all(and from roots only Minor Threat, all thought,I'm a little bit dissapointed that Ian MacKaye give up sXe at the end of his life).I come from a small country, but the rock music scene in my town is very important and we have lots of demo bands who play good, non comercial music which involves rock, punk, metal and varietes and I live for concerts.I don't know anyone who is,here,sXe,but I'm am,and,I don't have any touch with hardcore so I don't listen to it but I'm still sXe.I live to be sXe.and what do you,who say that hardcore is the central point of sXe,can do about it?!
