Sewing needles are one of the worst things you could use - they're really quite blunt (which is why they hurt so damn much when you prick yourself with them!). You really are better off going to a professional. Really. Professionals have piercing needles that come in sterilized packets straight from the manufacturer, like in hospitals. Unless you have an autoclave (it's like a mini-oven that uses high pressure steam or chemical vapor), there's no way you'll get the needle adequately sterilized. And you really don't want to get infected!!

If your mom is a worrywart, take her along to some local REPUTABLE piercing studios and ask the professional piercers to explain the procedure and their safety and sterilization procedures - that might help her understand about piercing some more and not worry so much. It also shows her you're taking it seriously and will be willing to take care of it properly, and so on.

my mom and dad won't let me get my bellybutton pierced, although i've been begging them for almost 2 years now.  All of my friends have theirs pierced, and thats not an exaggeration.  Even kids 2 years younger than me have theirs done! my dad said that i shouldnt be showing my stomache anyway, so why do i need it pierced? he also thinks that its not appropriate because i'm only 14.  I don't plan on going around with shirts not covering me up, i just really like the look of your bellybutton being pierced.  What should I say, or do, to make them let me get it done? i'm just so sick of waiting and seeing my friends get theirs done, and im still not able to!

If you must do it without a professional, I think you would be MUCH better off using a safety pin, all though seeing a professional would be the wiser choice. I got my belly button pierced without one and it turned out ok, but a lot of times they get infected. make sure to have the person who is doing it wash there hands with hot water and soap, and keep some antiseptic and put some one EVERY DAY to avoid infection.
