Collisions can still happen if several nodes
(ie computers) send in packets and the switch
buffer overflow has occured.

Half-duplex works optimally only if one device is transmitting and all the other devices are receiving, otherwise, collisions occur. When the collisions are detected, the devices causing the collision wait for a random time before retransmitting. Therefore, some collisions are inevitable.

A device configured in half-duplex uses CSMA/CD. With CSMA/CD the RX circuitry is connected to the TX circuitry (see CSMA/CD implementation for more details on CSMA/CD). This is the reason why collisions happen, even if only one device is configured in half-duplex.
