what was the italian insignia on their fighter/bombers represent? It had a circle with 3 sticks in that circle.

The insignia used on Italian aircraft was 3 roman fasces.  This was the symbol of Mussolini's National Fascist Party.  The party symbol was used on aircraft in the same way the swastika was used in germany, and the red star in Russia.  I hope that clarifys the issue.
