It's probably too late to help you, Ralph but hopefully this will help others. The EGR valve is located on the intake manifold, to the left of the throttle body. It has a tube going from the exhaust manifold to the EGR and there is also a rubber hose connected to the EGR. First check tube and hose for leaks and cracks and replace if necessary. Then with the engine running at normal operating temperature, watch the stem under the valve for movement and increase RPM to 2500. The stem should move up and down as the rpm's change. This indicates the EGR is functioning. I haven't tried this personally, but that's what it says in a book I have. If you have a 1992 or later turbo model, there is no EGR. Hope this helps somebody.
