There is no such thing as a pure chocolate great dane,it does not exsist. If you find one it will be a mutt and not pure in the slightest. If your looking for a black great dane, those are a real colour along with mantle, blue, brindle, fawn and harele.
any other questions feel free to email me

There are chocolate Great Danes, however from what I understand there are major life threatening issues for these Danes.

This link just goes into the genetics of it.
http://home.surewest.net/daneaffr/chocdane.html

This link is for other information on Great Danes.  If you look at this weeks "Dane of the week" (5/24/2004) you will see a small mentioning of chocolate Danes and a hint that there being an issues with them.

I hope this helps even if it's not news you would like.

CHOCOLATE GREAT DANES: This color has been observed in the Great Dane Breed for at least twenty-five years. This chocolate color is due to a simple recessive gene. When a dog carries two of these recessive genes it displays the influence of the chocolate gene. The genes impact on the five recognized colors is as follows:

Fawn - Pale peach color with darker chocolate mask
Brindle - Pale peach color with darker chocolate mask and stripes
Black - A solid chocolate
Blue - A dilute (silver/blue) chocolate
Harlequin - A white dog with chocolate patches
Since this color is caused by a recessive gene, a dog of any color may carry this hidden recessive gene.

Chocolate coloring is note accepted in the color standard; therefore, reputable breeders will not breed a chocolate great dane.  If a chocolate great danes does appear in a litter a reputable breeder will require a nueter/spay contract.

i have a chocolate dane.  and he is the most beautiful dane (color) i have ever seen.
i don't believe (you or danes) should or should not be judged on color. they should be judged on health, temperment, conformation. my dane pup is full blood dane.  if father is my harlequin male and his mother was i black female (friends dog)- but her parents were merle and brindle. - when she had the chocolate pup i looked all over the net for info. and the color codes or breeding only certain color to certain color was done by the germans to control who got to breed there dogs and to who they had to breed to.

do not be decieved, there is no such thing as a chocolate dane and if you do see one it will definetley be a mutt, all the other info about genes is simply not true, if this color is being seen it is not of true breeding some where down the line a labrador was introduced to the mix. I am a proffesional handler and breeder.

there IS such a thing as a chocolate Dane, and sorry to disagree with the other writer's comment, but it can come from completely reputable breedings, and does not have to be a mutt.  However, they are not recognized by the AKC.  I have never heard of a chocolate who has health problems, but I am not an expert as I have never bred one. I do know, however, that they are not caused by disreputable breedings.  There have been top-ten contenders who have produced a chocolate.  Here is a website explaining the phenomenon: http://www.dogstuff.info/chocolate_dane_chopson.html.

We had an accidental breeding last year while dog sitting for a neighbor. My male (Black) bred to her female (blue merle) of 12 puppies born 4 were an ugly merle-ish dirty color, 3 were blue with large black and white patches, and 5 were born black, but turned brown at about 4 months of age. We gave the puppies to good homes with a $100 donation to Houston Great Dane Rescue and a spay/neuter contract, none of the pups were papered. Anyway, a few months after all the pups went to their new homes we started getting phone calls from all 5 of the "black" pups adoptive parents. "My puppy is turning brown!" We all got together eventually so I could see for myself, sure enough the puppies were a rich chocolate brown, but as healthy as ever. 3 of the 5 brown danes were named Scooby! Long story short, no one should be breeding Brown danes, but it can happen. Never purchase one outright and do have a vet check the pup just in case!

i've spoken with the owner of "DaDane" before, her dane has Addison's Disease, which is a congenital disease found in several pure dog breeds--great dane being one of them. it is treatable, but expensive; and i would definitely take it into consideration when looking into owning a great dane. don't let it deter you from adopting, however! all dogs need a good home, even the sick ones...just thought i'd let you know.

A chocolate Great Dane is a mismark. "Breeders" get them when they don't adhere to the AKC color code.

What difference does it make what color they are? A chocolate Dane deserves to be loved just like any other color.  I remember "they" used to kill all white Boxers and Dobermans ~ what's next, chocolate Danes?  Absolutely ridiculous.  Diversity is real ~ accept it.  So to Mike who asked the original question of where to find a chocolate Dane, I hope you have one by now ~ you'll know it was worth it.

Check out this dog if you think that Chocolate GD's don't exist.  They are just hard to come by.

They are a very beautiful color and the color standards are a little over-rated - I want a companion that is beautiful not a showdog princess.

There are Chocolate Danes, it's just a diluted Black.  One who was a Brindle with chocolate stripes was shown in the 1970's.  She had a color pure pedigree quite a ways back to boot!

There are chocolate/brown great danes. Look it up at the Great Dane Club of America's website www.gdca.org/understandcolor.htm
To assume that a chocolate dane is a MUTT is absolutley ridiculous. Colors vary in all breeds. Did you know that there is a merle poodle??? There is. Just because a registry does not recognize a color(which is NUTS)does not make a dog any less a dog or breed than any other color.
