My roommate has several guinea pigs, and she enjoys picking them up and stroking them to produce what she calls a purr.  It sounds more like a growl to me, though, and the pig does NOT look happy to my untrained eye.  How can I tell the difference for sure?

Your roommate is right. Gurgling is a sign of happiness. Teeth clattering is what you need to be worried about. All 3 of my guinea pigs do it when I hold them and pet them, guinea pigs usually don't show emotion like humans or cats or dogs do they pretty much stay the same. You just have to learn to read their body and vocal movements.

purring ( gurgling) i hav found can mean a bad or good thing. It can also be that your roomate is stroking a certain area ( because guinea pigs gurgle when they are mating ew!) and that may be the reason.
