how do you tell when your chihuahua is pregnant

Around 4-5 weeks along she will get a bigger, harder tummy. The most popular signs are hard tummy, puppy movement at about 5 weeks along, eating more, being more picky, peeing more due to enlarged uterus, digging, getting lazier, laying around more, and a possible temperament change. The first signs don't come until about 4 weeks along sometimes later. I really need to warn you that chihuahuas due mostly to their size often have birthing complications that if not dealed with correctly can lead to death of the pup and/or the mom. You need to know how to take care of your dog and know how to tell she is ready for labor so you can be with her. You also need to know what to expect during labor so if something goes wrong you can call the vet. Sometimes the situation is too serious to waste precious time to call and wait for the vet so it would be a good idea to know what to do in certain situations. Answers to all these and more on whelping/stages of whelping you can find on http://www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/reproduction.htm
Your dog can show all the signs of pregnancy and not be pregnant sometimes. It is called false pregnancy and it can now be ruled out by getting a test at the vet called repro check. ($20-$30) Chihuahuas and all pregnant dogs are very delicate in their pregnant/whelping/nursing time so if you have any questions don't hesitate to email me at stanisha@aol.com
For the sake of your dog please don't breed again until you know all you can about breeding, pregnancy, whelping, puppy care, etc. There are so many pros and cons that could lose of save a life. Good luck!!! Tanisha

Tanisha is So Right!  I'm glad to have another voice on the board that recommends against casual breeding.  Please, don't breed your dog unless you are very knowledgeable, and have your dogs fixed if they're not going to be bred.  It's so much kinder to the animals.

i have a 2 year old chi, named dixie, last year she got preg while i was on holidays, the ppl who were 'watching' her said she got preg from their chi...but she had complications at birth, the puppy was too big!! it was just stuck, i took her to the vet, they had to do a c-section on her to get it out, i almost lost her, the puppy died of stress, and it was not a chi, the vet said dixie must have got preg from a rotty or something, the pup should have been about the size of a 2fingers, instead it was the size of a hotdog bun. anyways, that was last summer, now this summer she went into heat, once again while we were on holidays, the house she stayed at also owns a chi, how can i tell if my chi is preg? is this safe for her?

You should never breed dogs that are in the same family blood line it is wrong and could create many unwanted health concerns .Before you decide to breed you definetly should read books and do the research speak with a breeder thats knows!!!!!!!

NO!!!! do not breed the dogs who have any comon ancesstors!  You will get retarted puppies if thier is any hint of family blood in the mating couple!  Your puppies will run into walls and not be trainable or they may not even eat food... it is just not good to have any family relation at all when breading any dogs!

DONT DONT DONT BREED YOUR DOGS IF THEY ARE RELATED! DOGS DIE THIS WAY. IT IS NOT HEALTHY AND WILL NOT ONLY KILL PUPS BUT  YOUR MOMMA DOG COULD AS WELL. FIRST HAND SIGHT HAS SHOWN ME TOO MANY PRECIOUS PUPS WHO DIE DURING OR AT BIRTH. I'VE HEARD MANY TIMES THAT IT IS "NORMAL" FOR A PUP OR TWO FROM A LITTER TO DIE. THIS IS A BOLD FACE LIE.

If you inbreed your dogs any genetic defaults are more likely to show up in the puppies.  I wouldn't suggest it.

Well inbreeding is not suggested because of the chance of birth defects but normally one generation inbreeding 99 times out of 100 is usually completely harmless so that would be a judgement left up to you now that you know the risks

Since your two dogs have the same father that would be inbreeding which no person should do to their helpless animals. It can lead to deformities in your puppies.

I'm glad you asked, it can be very harmful to your dogs if you breed related dogs. It is called inbreeding, and can result in unhealthy babies. Good luck with you white female though!

   HI!
My little chihuhua escaped from the house and I didn't know. When I came back from work, she came out with a stray male chihuahua. I am caring for him right now, but I don't know if my chihuhua is going to be pregnant or not. When I took the male chihuahua in, my female one snaps and bites him whenever the male comes to me. It looks like my dog is jealous. But even though they don't really like each other, but live together, will they have puppies?
How long do I have to wait to find out??
PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very worried for my little dogs!

I just got a miniature dachshund about a month ago from a breeder. Within the last few days I have noticed many changes in her and my only guess is that she may be pregnant. Her nipples have got a little harder, she was vomiting the other morning and she has got a little fatter. She also has been digging a lot, which I read may be a sign of pregnancy, she has been sleeping a lot lately and has been very loving towards my boyfriend and I. I plan on making an appointment with the vet just to double check, but does anyone have any suggestions or may have a better idea if my little girl is pregnant or not?? Any help at all will help. THANKS!!!!

That would be a bad mistake. Ofton times the pups will have to endure bad reprocussions. When I was just starting out, many many years ago. I purchased a Doxie from a breeder. Supposedly legit. At 4 months old I lost the pup to seizers and convulsions. With some testing, (had to make sure it wasn't poison) we found that she was genetically unstable. Either brother/sister cross or parent/son or daughter cross. You can do this type of breeding 3 generations removed, but only to the betterment of the breed, pulling a certain characteristic from a group of dogs to be bred into another line. (a little complicated)any how the point is the pups may have serious complications if they survive. When I was in this predicament.(no breeding stock), I found a breeder willing to trade a young female (a cull from their lines)for one or a couple mounts from my male. That way I got a totally unrelated female with positive genetic possibilities. luck

My female chihuahua is 1 and half years old. She was born with a hernia too. The vet told me that it wasn't a big deal unless it got bigger over time. It has not changed since birth. Now I think she's pregnant. She went into heat about 4 weeks ago and we caught her and my male Rat terrier together. SHe's been lying around the house, getting sick (vomiting)Like water. Snapping at the male dog whom which she mated with and especailly at my other female (Jack Russell). Walks really slow too! And not quit as playful. Her hernia has not changed in size but her breast are bulging more and her stomach is hard. Plus her nose has a deep mark on it from where she has been digging. How does that pregancy test work? Do you use it with urine or does the vet have to do it? Can you buy it at Pets Mart? I can't take her to the vet right now to get that test.So if someone could please let me know what to do I'd appreciate it very much!

If the two dogs are related I would not breed. With the chocolate having a hernia I would just have her spayed as the weak abdominal wall can be passed genetically. Have you had your dogs checked to make sure they have good knees? If the patella slips off the knee you could pass this on to pups and have a litter of dogs that will become cripples. Also make sure neither dog has Brucellosis. This illness will cause the pups to die soon after birth and can be passed from one dog to the other through mating.

it is not wise to breed the two because the male dog and female dog are sister and brother. that would be inner breeding and their can be serious complications that the pups may go through. I bought a baby chi and later found out she was inner bred and before she turned one year she had a stroke and got worse from there. I later found out that it was because she was inner bred.

I just dont know how people can not know their Chihuahua's bred or were in heat.. for that matter. I know it's very obvious to see when my Chihuahua was in heat.I mean their vulva's go from practically not there to very large.. The male was yipping and yapping and didn't want anyone near the female. And I did breed them, (champ.lines) so I was there to keep them still because the female wanted to wiggle all over and I was afraid they would hurt each other. They tied for what at least 15 minutes.. I just don't know how anyone can miss their dogs being in heat or breeding is my point. You shouldn't just throw two dogs together and let them go to town either.

I took my chi, Phoebe, to the vet Friday for an ultrasound to see if she is pregnant. Since she is only 21 days today, he was not completely sure, but there was one sack on Friday, we go back on 12/23. Her temperment has changed and all she wants to do is to be held and loved, which is definitly not a problem. I am worried, because my male chi was supposed to have been nutered in June of this year. He is the only dog that has had access to her, and when she was in heat, he found a way around her pants and they were stuck for about 15 minutes or so. I did not want to pull them apart, and she bleed a lot after they came apart. Do you think this could be a real pregnancy? Please help!!

If you had genetic problems that would be fatal for your child would you procreate?

Assuming you are a guy, would you have babies with your sister? Or your mother?
Assuming you are a gal, would you have babies with your brother? Or you Father?

Put yourself in the animals place...

Do not EVER breed to dogs if they are related.  Just as in humans, there are many risks involved that may potentially affect the offspring.  Although you may think that your two beautiful chis will have nothing but beautiful babies,  do you really want to risk the quality of life of each puppy? Not to mention the quality of life of your chocolate female.  For the sake of your dogs and yourself and any future puppies, if you breed your red and white, be sure to learn everything you can prior to mating your dogs.

To Devi, yes it is VERY bad. lol. We accidently let a father and daughter breed, well we didnt know they had then she turned up pregnant, and it wasn't very good. She had two puppies, one had mental problems and died after some months, the other was born with ONLY TWO LEGS. He is still alive and doing well, he as learned how to hop on his back legs, but we will NEVER let that happen again!

I have a 4 year old chihuahua that I am scared to death might be pregnant. We have never had to worry about her getting pregnant because she is our only dog and she stays indoors. But we recently moved to a new home and when she was in heat she got outside and was with our next door neighbors miniature pincher all day. It has been about a month now and she is all of a sudden getting really moody, eating alot more, and snaps at me when I try to touch her stomach. I am scared because of all the things I have heard that can go wrong with chihuahua'pregnancies and also how much bigger the other dog was than her. If anyone could please let me know if these sounds like pregnancy signs or am I just worrying too much. I won't be able to take her to the vet until 2 weeks from now because of my financial difficulties I am having right now. Of course this would have to happen when I don't have the money to have her checked out like she needs to. Please someone give me some advise.

I am a new breeder.  We just opened our kennel and got our USDA license... So maybe I don't have the facts straight...But I would NEVER breed a brother and sister.  I have all the pedigrees to my dogs, and I hesitate to breed dogs that share a grandparent...Straight line breeding is done, but you will make any flaw the dog has, twice as bad.

NO,its a bad idea to breed you chihuahua with her brother. It can and likely will cause birth defects inside and out. If you really cared about animals you wouldn't breed at all and would support your local shelter or rescue where hundreds of animals are waiting for people to come and take them in.

i have two chihuahuas my self that are mating. I would have to say that you tell from a hard tummy and change in behavor, eating and if they try to make a bed for her puppies. In two months she might
have puppies. Also after 24 days get her checked out by a vet.

no you should definately not breed them when they are related because then they shall ave the same genes going around thier bodies. it could lead to deformity in the pup!

No absolutely do not breed incest. Your puppies will be born with birth defects or it could kill the mother. Also make sure that the male is smaller than any female you breed it with. Like 2 pounds smaller or the puppies will be to big and again the mother will die. If you have any more questions pick up the book called breed for dummies. lol

And an added thought ---

If you were anything close to a reputable breeder, you wouldn't have to sit online asking questions to strangers on a message board.

That in and of itself proves that you are unqualified to breed your animal(s), let alone the stupid questions that are being asked.

Devi, I also heard that  inter-breading can cause complications in the pups, Im not sure if having the same father will make any huge effects but you should check with a vet just to be sure. My Mom had a dog that was inter-bred through 3 generations. He was blind and distemperd, I think checking with a vet is a good way to go.

I have a beautiful and hilarious white female chi.  She is my little sweety!  Anyway, she is about 18 weeks old and I was at the vet yesterday getting her next set of shots.  I ran into someone there who had a male (8 wks) brindle looking chi.  He was gorgeous!!!  We got to talking and thought maybe when they are older they could be bred.  I have no breeding experience and would NEVER put my puppy in harms way!  Is it a good idea to just take both the male and female to a breeder and let a professional handle it...or just not to breed them at all?  They are both too beautiful to not procreate!  Please help!  Id like to explore my options here.

NO! Absolutely do not breed animals of the same descent.  It's the same as people, you never breed "family members".  One problem is it can cause temperment and health issues in the pup.  In addition you can't register an animal that has parents from the same family because they are considered "in-bred" dogs, may also be hard to find a family, due to issues the pup could experience it may not have a long term home anyways.

its just like with humans, inbreeding can cause complications, if the dogs are related, especially with the complications with small dogs, its best not to breed them.

It is definately not good to inbreed your dogs with related dogs. We also have a red and white male pup that is brother to our chocolate, white and red parti-colored female. (She has green eyes <3) You should not inter-breed them or breed them together.

My older, blond female chi got out about 6 weeks ago-  the neighbor says her champagne chi bred her on the date she escaped. suddenly BAM, she's hefty. I rescued her as a stray so I don't even know how old she is. I know she has had litters before tho, she had a litter when I found her barely alive and in dead of winter.

I have delivered larger pups before, but I am definately seeking vet advice.
