What program generates files with a .sit extension?
More importantly, how can I open it?

.sit is a "stufit" file.  This format is common on the MacOS platform.  

I do not know of freely available tools, but a search for 'stuffit' should take you to the commercial vendor's site.  There you can get a tool to unpack .sit files on linux, windows, and macos

I've found a shareware ( a freeware for the expander, actually! ), at stuffit.com.

There is an alternitive, free program that's alot smaller than stuffit. You can find it at http://sac-ftp.externet.hu/pack11.html and it's called mindexp. Only for windows though.
