What is the biggest chihuahua ever known?

Chihuahuas by breed standard cannot exceed six pounds, although it is possible to find purebreeds that are up to nine pounds of healthy weight.  Chihuahuas have a tendency to gain weight, not because of anything with them, but because of their owners.

They are so cute that many times the owners carry them everywhere and overindulge them with people food and treats, making Pepe a very fat dog.  A chihuahua who when healthy would weigh 5 pounds can easily become a 10 or 15 pound dog, so fat it waddles and its tummy drags on the ground.  Very Unhealthy.

Chihuahuas have energy, they like to run and play, and also need to eat fairly frequently because of that.  Feeding them once a day is a good guarantee that they will stuff themselves whenever there is food, then later be lethargic because they are hungry.  I feed freely, there are always kibbles available, and snacks are tiny tiny tidbits.

A dog in good condition that is over 9 pounds is usually one that has some non-chi in its background.

Good for you!  There are several good quality reduced calorie dog foods that will fill him up while trimming him down.  Also, I suspect part of the problem was too many treats and too many of the wrong kind.  People food is for people, pet food is for pets.

HI! My 4year old male chi is AKC registered and weighs in at 13.5 lbs. He is not fat by any means. He was the largest of his litter, so we knew he was going to be a giant. He is close to the size of a small Jack Russell. People always ask if he is a chi, because he is so big. Just like us humans have a standard height, there are always those few that play for the NBA!

I thought the breed standard was a maximum of 9 pounds? Anyway my Chi is 9 pounds and by no means fat at all.  She doesn't get people food but sometimes i use bits of chicken that has been grilled plain as a treat.

Hi!  I have a one-year old Chihuahua and he weighs 15.1 pounds (I just took him to the vet).  He is also AKC registered.  I got him when he was two months old and weighed 3 pounds.  He is a long-haired Chi, what you would call "blue" in color.  I was told that his father (short-hair Chi) weighs 3 pounds and his mother (long-hair Chi) weighs 10 pounds.

No one believes me when I tell them that he's a Chi.  He actually looks like a Mini Dobie.  And just like Cesar Chavez, my Chi could also play for the NBA.  I also have a female Chi and she weighs 4 pounds (she is from the same breeder as my male).

To see the two of them together and compare their size, it's rather funny.

Hi! I have what is probably the largest chihuahua ever.  I "rescued" him from Petland almost 10 years ago.  I had to have him because he was solid white with green eyes, and the cutest little pink belly.  My family had always had Chihuahuas, but I had never seen one with this coloring.  They told me when I bought him ($800 later) that he would not get any bigger than 7-8lbs.  My little man is now 24lbs.  I know its hard to believe, but its true.  This dog means the world to me, as Im sure you can all understand--being Chihuahua owners.  He is my best friend and we are working on getting him on a better diet/exercise routine so he will live as long as he can, but he hates it.  He just loves to relax!  Could there be a Chihuahua in the world bigger than mine?

We have 9 chihuahuas.  One, which was very small at purchase, stayed on track for about 3 months.  According to my weight chart (which is usually close) he would get to 4.5 pounds.  Suddenly, at 3 1/2 months, his growth took off.  He's huge.  Topped out at 20 pounds, he is now 17 pounds.  In addition to being really large, he's fat.

I have a 2 year old male Chihuahua that I purchased from a pet store.  The store had told me that he would only be 7lbs at adulthood.  BUT he's about 13.5 and has been on strictly diet food for about a year.  He might be slightly chunky but I think even if he was totally fit he'd still weigh in at 12lbs.

Greetings! I have a 3 year old long haired chi who averages weight of 16 pounds. He is registered with the Continental Kennel Club. He is not fat, just very robust. He loves to run and is fast enough that he has 2 chipmunk catches to his credit. Are long-hairs apt to be bigger than the short hairs?

Hi I just read all the responses to the question I actually wanted answered.  My Chihuahua perfectly named Hercules is a beautiful boy that weighs in at 15 pounds and his litter was registered (haven't done him yet).  I know he is purebred and have been bothered by his size.  I truly think he is perfect.  There is not an ounce of fat on him, he runs constantly and eats when he wants to.  I wanted to find out if there were other large sized chihuahuas out there but so far I think he is at the top.  I was amazed to find out that a female in the same litter topped out at 3 pounds.  Hercules is just amazing.  Chihuahua all the way :)

Our Roxy, a 4yr old chihuahua weighs in at just under 13 lbs.  She is extremely active, not overweight, just a big little dog.  She loves to play catch with Tennis balls and she has no problem catching them in mid air.  Each Tennis ball lasts about 2 days before she breaks it apart and leave little fuzzy rubber pieces all over the house.

My husband and I adopted a Chi one year ago.  It had been left at the pound where I volunteer and was going to be euthanized due to her condition.  She's at least 13 years old, underweight, and has lost all her teeth but one.  Our vet said it looked like her previous owner let an abcess eat away at all her teeth, gums and part of her lower jaw.  The poor thing looked pitiful.  Needless to say we took her in and nursed her back to health.  She now weighs a healthy 9 pounds. She's very active and enjoys being with me everywhere I go.  You wouldn't know it was the same dog.  One thing I would like some input on is her diet.  I cook her chicken, turkey, pork, and some beef, then cut it into pieces she can chew and put a little gravy on it.  She also gets cottage cheese and every once in a while a little yogurt.  She likes that.  I'm just curious what other foods would be good for her.  Any ideas?

I have a male chocolate and white chihuahua who's 12 lbs, pushing 13. He's a horse! But he's not fat at all. He's got great definition in his muscles and beautiful deer head features. For a while we thought he wasn't really a chihuahua until we took him back to the breeder and saw the parents who he looked exactly like. And his siblings from the same litter were half his size. My mother says he's the throw back of the litter. But he's extremely smart.
We also have a little girl who was the runt of her litter and doesn't even reach his stomach yet.
So for now we have one very large chihuahua who's birthday is the 28th of Feb (1st year)
And a itty bitty girl who's 4 months old still under 2 lbs but healthy and active.

Some chi's are bigger than others! The average tea cup chi is around 1-4 lbs. But there are bigger chi's . 1Over  10lbs is pretty big, but if he/she is healthy, not to FAT, and a good pet than i guess it doesn't really matter! Your chi wont get any smaller but if he starts to get fat you can start feeding him a diet food like. The biggest chi tho (to answer your question) was around 21 lbs. which was in Colima which is in the west of Mexico. If you have any other questions just let me know!

You know that is a tough question! The average chi is around 5 lbs. Mine is very small and weighs around 2 lb.!! If your chi is perfectly healthy and everything...than you good. If he is fat you can start feeding him or her a diet food! This will help him loose wait and every once will make him smaller. If your chi is a good dog and healthy and active than let him be 100 lbs. To answer your question though, the biggest chi was 29 lbs. He was in Taluca, Mexico. His parents were around 15 lbs.! One GIANT chi!
If you have any more Questions..let me know!

I also have a 2 year old male chi who is AKC registered, muscular (not fat), healthy, beautiful, and weighs 12.11 pounds! People always "accuse" me of him being mixed... Small dog snobs, I guess.
My dog is a therapy dogs and assists the disabled students in my class, is super friendly, loves all types of animals of different sizes, and really loves kids.  I guess his personality doesn't fit the chihuahua "standards" either.

I have a 10 weeks old Chihuahua female with black saddle and head and the black around the cheecks and eyes, german shepheard colored ears and tan rearend, tan underside and tan legs. She has to tan hypnotic spots on top of her near between the eyes.  I was told she is a purebred Chihuaua, however, my vet told me he thought my Chi may have some non-Chi gene pool from past generation Chi's, although my beloved Chi seems to look like a FULL purebred Chi. She is a large sized Chi weighing at 10 pounds. She is NOT overweight.  Very athletically lean and youthfully active and eats a healthy well balanced diet. So, anybody knows about this size.  It doesn't really matter whether she is a 100 percent full Chi or not. She still gets all of my unconditional love and lots of pampering anyways.  I am just curious because I am trying to learn and understand more about Chi's and other people's disputes of chihuahua size as to what looks pure bred and what looks not.  Some say mine appears to have some minature Pinscher inbred with a Chi in the past generation gene pool. Unless otherwise it's an unusual large sized Chihuahua I happen to have.  Help me out, please.  Many Chi-thanks!

I have a purebreed longhair chihuahua who is 14 pounds but he is in perfect shape, he has very little fat on him, no gut so to speak, and stick like legs. Why is he like that? both his parents were under 7 pounds and his siblings are relitively anarexic looking(and under 7 pounds). The mom had 7 her first litter(he was one of them) which is weird too. I have pics and am wonder if there is a guiness record for largest healthy chihuahua?
