my intrepid 2000 is getting a rattle under acceleration(in the engine). The mechanic has asked around, and chrysler has been very unhelpful, saying the engine is too new for much knowledge to have been gained..but he has been told it is likely the adjusters, and not the timing chain itself...anyone have any ideas?? or something we haven't thought about? we are being told its going to be 1000 just for parts, plus a very labour intensive period just to get to the timing chain to see if that even is the problem

I have been told that it is possible these 2.7 v-6 engines tend to egg out the wrist pin holes in the pistons, causing a knock. After a while, it is possible for the engines to fail completely.  I have one with this problem, and it is a low-mileage well serviced engine...now the car is not worth repairing, because of the cost of these engines.  So far, I have found at least three on other websites with the same issues.

I had the same problem on my 2000 dodge. I took it to a mechanic and he found one of the camshaft bearing was worn out. He replaced it, but 2 months later a rod blew.

It's a rod knock, common chrysler engine defect, use synthetic oil to help lubricate better and reduce the knocking........ after a while though, the knock begins to sound like a jackhammer, then after a couple thousand miles, the engine is finished

I have a 2001 2.7L intrepid, and I have been to 5 web sites with rattling, ticking during idle and acceleration issues not to mention mine has a rear main oil seal leak(losing 1 quart every 100miles). Some engineer needs to reverse engineer to correct the flaws or change the design because this ain't cutting it.

it's probly your timing chain is worn but nose is because the tentioner can't take up the slack anymore I just rebuilt mine and it didn't make nose but the tentioner was all the way out and the chain needed to be replaced it's a very $ costly one too but better than 6.000 for a new engine

2002 Intrepid. I had a rattle that started at about 15 mph when accelerating or pulling up hill - the dealer checked everything out and dismissed engine and transmission as the problem - he then said all he can do is play around with the valve cover bolt tension as he feels this noise is caused by a harmonic vibration of this cover! He did get it to go away for a while but it reappears slowly over time and is now evident at 35 - 40 mpg and below.
