A friend of mine has given us a Yorkshire Terrier puppy.  She is only 7 weeks old and we have been giving her the puppy milk as recommended by various pet stores and experts as I have been told on numerous occasions that she was far too young to leave her mother.  She is drinking the majority of the milk everyday (I was told she needed at least 1/4 of a pint everyday)and on some days she drinks all of it.  We are also giving her small bits of food which she is eating.  Her bladder and bowels seem fine as she is regularly going to the toilet but a friend who has owned dogs in the past says she isn't getting enough liquids in her.  She doesn't drink a huge amount of water unless she licks it off my finger or if she is in the mood and I have taken to filling a small syringe and making her drink at least one lot every night before bed.  I know she isn't dehydrated because she is alert and happy but I cannot help worrying that I am not doing enough for her, does anyone have any suggestions regarding liquid intake and could anyone help with suggestions for any food I can give her to help build her up.  She eats small amounts of puppy food, minced meat with a little gravy and she also enjoys a little bit of scrambled egg (but not everyday).

First, you should not feed your dog eggs. Second, ALWAYS contact a vet when you are suspicious of your puppies behaviors.

First of all, try hard to stay away from any human food. Period. I have two Yorkies, and have been feeding my oldest one small scraps of human food for the 2 1/2 years I have had her. A few weeks ago she nearly died after feeding her a dime size piece of cooked bacon. She could not stand up, was collapsing all the time, shrieking in pain. She ended up in the vet for 2 nights straight on an IV. She is perfect again, but only after keeping her on dog food.

The vet said if you insist on feeding her human food to stick to fruit and veggies, and maybe chicken. Anything with fat in it is a no/no. Although you may not see it now, this dog will have problems in the future. It is too tiny to do that to.

As far as drinking, my youngest Yorkie drinks very little. Not much at all. My oldest one (the one that was sick) drinks quite a lot. Both are healthy. It depends on the dog. I only feed them water with an enzymatic breath freshner put in it. They love it, and drink when they need it.

As for food, they are both on Eukanuba small bites for adults. If yours won't eat, she eventually will. She is just being fussy if she doesn't eat what is out. You often have to out-stubborn Yorkies.

I was feeding them wet/dry combo, but they eat so little the wet food would go bad before we could use it. Also, it upset their stomachs at times. And, Yorkies have hard to take care of teeth, so the hard food benefits them.

I am looking for a new food, as the one I am using, Eukanuba has corn in it, which is apparently bad for Yorkies.

Good luck!

We are also having some issues with getting our newest addition to drink water.  He is eliminating with no problem, and loves to eat the wet canned puppy food (that is NOT on recall).  He was drinking out of his bowl at first, and also licking off of ice cubes.  Now we can't really see him drinking alot.

This was the first I had read about giving the puppy milk.  We weren't told that, and our puppy is almost eight weeks old now.

I'd love to see some other suggestions for getting them to drink too.  We're going to call the vet and ask them what they would suggest.
